Should main character be an origin or custom character?
For the best experience, should my main character be an origin character (like Red Prince) or a custom-made character?

Doesn't matter in the slightest.

Custom has a better source power, Origin has another story to explore. Since you cannot explore every story in a single playthrough, it doesn't matter.

I would say Origin just because you get more story, dialogue and choices pertaining to a character.

"More story" is a bit misleading. You do get to experience one additional Origin quest/story for the run, but you won't get them all anyhow. Custom leads to a clear 3 now and 3 later for a second run. You do get a bit extra control over the Origin character's actions regarding their quest, meaning you can potentially change the course of how they play out, though its not often a major change (though it can be). You still get their story if you use them as a companion though, its just kept a little more vague at moments since its not like they immediately trust you just because you're in the same party.

In the end I always recommend playing what appeals to you the most. If you look at the female lizard and find you really like their appearance or want to play a male elf or other character/gender combo that isn't represented by Origin characters, just play them. You'll be happier in the end and since the game averages 80-120 hours per run, you'll want to prevent regretting your choice halfway through.

If it isn't clear, all the Origin characters are also the companions you can recruit to your party. Consider that when setting up your game.

listen to their intro when you click them if they sound appealing play as them, if they do not then do not.

So far I am enjoying playing a first playthrough as a custom human with the Red Prince, Ifan, and Beast on tactician. I think it could get a bit overwhelming with the lore dumps of 4 origin + learning mechanics, especially if you play on a harder difficulty. And I like being able to basically control my own backstory instead of having to learn 4

I think it's probably intended to play as an origin character but I'd second the above. Playing through as Ifan it's good but there's so much going on, it's gets a tad confusing at times. I honestly wish I'd made a custom and gone in as a blank slate... Plus, you can set up racials etc as you want. I've got him wearing the race change hat because the elf ability seems so much better than the others.

It's the best race ability yes but it's not so good that you should give up your helmet slot. Helmets are often your best gear because they only ever roll combat abilities and sometimes immunities. Besides, encourage is good. It lets you do things like circumvent attribute requirements so gear can pay for itself (like Constitution for shields). And because of the way the game calculates the added constitution, it is technically a heal in combat.

I faced the same issue just a few days ago x). Started with an origin character but changed my mind and made a custom one. It's all up to you what kind of story you want. If you want premade stories for your character other and more story, dialogue choices chose a origin character. However if you want to create your own story like I did go for custom. It still offer tons of choices and you can be do and be whoever you want. You can still experience character origin stories by having them in your party.

I personally enjoyed making my own then having 3 origins fill out the party.

It felt like the main character was "me", not someone else's story. And i was shocked how invested i became in the origin characters as the story unfolded, as it felt like i had the relationship wit h them.

Id vote make your own, but dont play as lone wolf as then youre crippling yourself of more stories.

What is your best experience? Do you want to play as yourself, or do you want to pretend to be one of the characters?
