Are the mechanics of Baldurs Gate 3 and DOS2 the same?
Just started DOS2. Working methodically through. I like it lot. I was wondering if the mechanics are the same in Baldurs Gate 3?

No, not at all. Baldur's Gate uses DnD 5e, DOS2 uses it's own RPG system.

No, bg 3 has a different rule set, but if you liked this, you'll probably like bg 3 too

No.

The "game mechanics", Yes. The RPG system, No.

You'll find a lot of the UI and whatnot to be identical, but the actual rules for things like combat are entirely different. Armor isn't a health bar that stops CC effects in BG3, instead it increases your Armor Class stat that makes you harder to hit. In DnD, you'll miss a lot more attacks than you do in this game.

Honestly, even DOS 1 doesn't follow the same rules either.

I have never played DnD. I played POE1 and POE2 as the first games of this type.

Thanks for the info.

The main difference between D&D and Divinity OS2 is Divinity has basically no RNG whereas D&D is basically all RNG. In Divinity a crit will always deal more damage than a non-crit. Meanwhile, in D&D it is very possible for a normal hit to deal twice the damage of a critical hit. If you roll max damage on a great sword hit with a +3 modifier you’ll hit for 15 damage. If you roll minimum damage on a critical hit with that same sword, it’d deal just 7 damage. At the same time, a max damage crit there would be 27 damage.

Everything is a dice roll in D&D. In Divinity, you typically know exactly what the effect of any given action will do before you do it. Gives each game a very different feel. I won’t say one is better than the other, they both have their pros and cons.

Divinity and BG3 are different. But it would be silly to think they aren't extremely similar. The underlying game mechanics are different as it's all based on dice rolls and using DnD dice rolls to determine the outcome of your actions. However, everything else is quite possibly the same. The cRPG aspect; the same. The party system; same (including grouping ungrouping), the loot system; the same, the leveling up; the same, the way you interact with the world; the same.

I would say BG3 is much much harder than Divinity OS II, and BG3 is a lot more complex. Divinity is really nice if you want a game where you can absolutely steam-roll the enemy just by casually playing, whereas with BG3 the game mechanics are very in-depth and need a lot of attention paid to it to really get that same steam-rolling effect.

In short:

Dos2 have more stuns, physical and magical, you can also stunlock almost anyone and almost infinitely.

Dos2 don’t force you to regain any kind of magic/skill via some events, if you have it - you can use it (unless some source point skills, but you just need source points to use it)

Dos2 have overall less status effects then BG3, less spells/skills for support/attack and etc.

Dos2 have almost no random at all (if we ignore crits and heavy debuffs), yes, hit chance is default 95%, but it’s not an XCOM - in 99% you will hit the target.

Dos2 have armor feature, so you can’t freely stun enemy with easy.

Dos2 also have almost no random for actions too, if you have max thief level - there is no option that you can fail any thief event, same with convincing via dialogs and etc.

Dos2 have an option to complete immunity aka 100+% default resistance using just runes and armors.

Overall Dos2 is easier then BG3.

I played BG3 and came to divnity after it as I enjoyed BG3. Mechanics are quite different but the gameplay is quite similar. To put it simply, IMO if you enjoyed BG3 you'll like this, as I'm having a blast with both. Two solid and addicting games.
