The Fane fanboys don't even realise the guy was not even supposed to be in the game originally, he came up as bonus from the kickstarter. Just because he's linked to the main story doesn't mean he's a main character in any shape or form.
The main character is the one you choose, simple as that.
Personally, I think the main character is whomever you choose to play as... which is essentially the point of an RPG.
The Seven may have committed the greatest wrong, but Fane's allegorical match is that of eating from the tree - despite being commanded not to, he insisted on pursuing forbidden knowledge behind the king's back, and sharing it with his fellows (unwisely, as it turned out). And while his intentions may have been good, there's a certain infamous road paved with those - something he ends up learning the hard way.
