Warning though: the game is in early access (only act 1 available and level 4 max), with planned full release next year. There's already a lot of content with act 1 if you wanna try it. It has local co-op.

EDIT:
Sadly no local coop on that, I remembered it cos we steamlinked an ipad to "coop" it before my friend bought a copy, to try it out.
A game thats a little different, but very hard with a ton of replay value, and can be local coop is For the King. Its turn based, but plays more like typical Final Fantasy turn-based party combat, instead of a top-town strategy.
Dont let the art style fool you, its great adventuring and a semi rogue-lite. But if difficulty isnt your jam, it has easier modes. And every failed quest "unlocks" more in the world.

I'd definitely appreciate more recommendations and ideas if anyone has any!!
It doesn't have to be particularly similar or identical to DoS2 - that was is extremely hard to beat and no game I found so far comes even close.
But any good "Play Together" worthy games - and Couch Coop games - would be most welcome, since I'm short of ideas ;( !!
Now that you mention it. I actually own DoS1 Enhanced Edition on Steam (turns out, I totally forgot about it). We tried it long ago, but couldn't get into it (only 1 session though iirc). Then we got into DoS2 - and while it was a rough start slogging through the massive, overwhelming Fort Joy - we did learn to enjoy and eventually love it.
The story, the setting, the factions and powers at play, the characters & NPCs, the dialogue and decision making and the writing especially - all felt a lot more advanced, mature, serious and deep.
And on top of that the Combat and gameplay was rich and engaging from the get go, and still is. Feels rewarding and satisfying to make your own builds and grow stronger.
Diablo 3 ?
And the older PS2 games now re-released: Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 and Dark Alliance 2 ?
Diablo 3 Eternal Collection is on sale for 20$ on PS5, ending in a few days. (Still expensive for a 10+ yo game!) I was wondering if that will be a good game to move into after DoS2...?
It has Couch Coop, with a shared screen, I think? No split screen so no splitting apart your own way: during exploration, NPC interaction and other activities. Right?
Originally I wanted to play Diablo 2 Resurrected with him, but turns out there NO LOCAL COOP for this game... So no Couch Coop. Mind boggling and lame.
There's also Baldur's Gate DA games, although they seem more archaic and arcadish, and the prices are ridiculously high for a PS2 game...
We are worried it won't have any story and just mindless hack and slashing, constant loot drops, inventory micromanagement and grinding...
Anyone has experience with those games?
It seems stuck & lost without news or progress for quite a few years now...
(Also I thought Local Coop was not added yet? Or was it controller support can't recall.)
We would definitely jump into Baldur's Gate 3 (aka DoS3) if it had a Full Release already... Be it on PS5 or PC! I wish they finished making it already. Get going Larian!
Both BG3 and Diablo 4 are no where near a solid release yet, not anytime soon and no date, which is a massive let down, frankly...
Anyway, it's *really hard* to move on from DoS2 and its impeccable 2-player Story Coop Experience (we still haven't finished it). I'm bummed they never made a big story Expansion Pack DLC for it. And that they never made a proper DoS3 sequel.
I hope thet can get their stuff together sorted for BG3 and release it fully soon, whatever happened there.
If not, maybe they should shift the project for DoS3.
I'd appreciate it.
Welp. Anything else?
Would still appreciate recommendations.
