When do I find a companion?

I'm am currently at level 7 and there has been no sign of a companion besides the elf thats locked up in Ft. Joy, I think I did something wrong because I've been doing it solo for a while now attacking by myself killing enemies very oddly. I have been having the most tense ass tightning battles that make me wonder if I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up somewhere?

There is 3 companions to find, one Elf on the beach (with a needle), a strange young woman near the shrine of the Seven and the lonely rogue, human one near the fort entry. Good luck !

The 4 presets can be recruited as companions (Lohse, Sebille, the Red Prince and Ifan). If you took one of them as your starting characters, you can't take him as companion too (obviously).
All of them can be found in the Fort Joy area:
Red Prince is very close to your spawn on the beach, looking at the sea.
Lohse is at the waypoint-shrine inside the Fort.
Ifan is just outside the central cooking-area (where this bandit-boss wants you to find his orange).
Sebille is at the beach, close to the blue lizard who stole the oranges.

Question, if you are playing as a custom character, can you recruit all four at the same time or is the party limit smaller?

If you play as a custom character, you are able to recruit all of the preset characters. However do note that the four preset character's do have story and lore tied to them and possibly future banter.

Your party can have 4 chars maximum. So you have to leave one of the presets behind. But you can always switch, it is not a permanent decision which one you leave at the Fort
