The pig wizard wasn't bugged when I went back into the game either.
First of all: people are misleaded by the idea that you need the Purging Wand explicitly in order to get rid of Shriekers. That is not true. You need an ability to get rid of them in the first place. If you acquire this ability or not is up to you, since there are meant to be multiple ways to achieve this goal.
Below all that I know so far:
To get the Helm of Braccus Rex, you have to go to the Braccus Armoury (Which lies north of the swamp, looks like a bigger castle ruin. On your first time there will be Magisters fighting Gareth. THE Gareth, you will need for Seeker quests, save his ass!. In there you find the Shrine of Braccus Rex. To open the gate with the cursed lever, you have to own and use the Bless ability on it. Bless can be acquired from the Sourcerer god, when you enter his realm through the Statue of the Seven in the Swamp just below Braccus Armoury. Keep this in mind, since it is going to be useful against Curse status throughout the ENTIRE game and turns any field affected by a status effect into a BUFF!
To get the Purging Wands, there are 2 of them on the first map. You have to either go to the far east of the map, where you will find a small isolated area with the bound frost Dragon. To free him, you need to bring him one of the Purging Wands. To get the first one (best the one you directly give to him), you go southwards (it's just a few steps away) to the end of the beach, where you will find the entrance of the Skull Cave at the cliff. Enter this cave, and kill Radeka the Witch. She will summon 4 minions when the fight begins, you will be in a bad spot if you stand in the middle of the cave, so I suggest to place your group far out or something like that. Once you kill her you will get the first wand. The second wand can be obtained from the Vault of Braccus Rex, in the Illusionary Cave, also known as Madman Cave (Madman = Trompdoy). That cave is located in the very south-east of the first map and you will need high enough Wits (stat) to see the illusionary entrance pop up. Once inside, just finish the dungeon that is filled with pathetic tricks and battles, to get to the Vault of Braccus Rex, and all of his treasures, including the second wand.
You can from there use one wand for the Dragon, who will automatically destroy all Shriekers at the end of the first map, before fighting the Bishop. And you can use the second wand for your own purposes, like using the ability for example in battle, or you can destroy Shriekers with it on your own.
I'm not sure, but I've heard that the Seekers also have a quest where they need a want. Could be a viable choice for the second wand, if you have it. This however, I cannot confirm.
Whatever you do, for future reference and for official release, I highly recommend using at least one Purging Wand on the Dragon, because I can imagine that he appears later in the game again if you free him, and not just on the first map!
