Do I get a party if I'm playing single player?
Or do I just get the one character?

You can have up to four members in a party (NPC companions or other players). I believe you can open up a single player game to other people at any time too. However it is best to play with them all the way from character creation.
you'll find people, you get one guy almost at very start long as you talk with him enough. So yea are people you can pick up in game =3

Do I get to control them directly or do they just follow the main character around and act as bit players in the main character's story?

Like I read the whole "competitive coop" article where you have each character taking a unique path through the world. I'd love to have that in single player where I'm swapping between characters doing that.

You can control them directly. Idk how the competitive co-op aspect ties in to singleplayer though.

you can swap between character and un-chain them to controll them doing other things.

You only make one character, the others must be story NPC you pick up. Devs specifically removed the ability to create a party in single player because they think the pre-made companions are so brilliantly written and intriguing that they don't want you the player not to see their backstories. Also the competitive multiplayer/in-party arguing is basically removed in singleplayer and you get a general mass effect-esque approval system (not quite but close enough) where the motivations of your single player party ultimately doesn't matter because your main PC has plot power.

Well that's less intriguing.
