I also found out a place in the Stonegarden Cemetary where it seems the Scholar tag is necessary to open a chest (on top of other criterion). But I wouldn't be surprised if there's other ways to do all those.
I found a similar thing with Jester with a lamp on a beach that I couldn't do without Jester on another save.
It just gives bigger replay value, I don't mind it it's pretty RP to be honest.
And nobody can teach us this ancient language or help with books.
I think you should stop to consider this game as a typical game with a quest book where you can do all your quest in order and have your reward. You should play it more organically and try to help out people/solve problems naturally rather that just going through your checklist. I say that because I see many posts about the journal (which is not a quest log by the way, just saying) and the completion status of some "quests" (which are not quests either). It's not a typical game, don't expect to do typical stuff.
There are other ways there. Red Prince, Elf memories, talking salamander.
I'm not considering this game as you described.
Jester — not so usefull and can't block a lot of quests.
Outlaw — helped in Driftwood with guard.
But Scholar red-cross whole Blood Isle after killing Advocate.
Statues, Tree and Name of Demon + Natali. And you can't use another ways to complete this quests and that's not some kind of "replayable".
You can't ask someone like "Hey, I think you can help me with this books. Can you teach me this language?" because of this tag.
RP dead. Elf memories? Wich one?
I think if it ignore that completely it's fair that some avenues might be closed out to you.
We have Jester, Outlaw, Barbarian, Mystic, Noble and Soldier.
