Its really a classless system so you can build everyone however you want.
Seems like a simple feature to have the class name in the inventory or skill page
And all my companions have a very different skillset, i cant really see whcih one i made dmg mage, which one i made conjuror or battlemage or w/e.
It really seems like such a simple thing to just put the class u chose for a companion somewhere, but like the rest of this game, its unintuitive and needlessly clunky.
There is no reason you ever need to know what "class" you selected originally. It is irrelevant to game mechanics that you picked Cleric or Ranger beyond what skill points you invested in. The easiest way to check what mix of skill classes a character has is by looking at their character sheet and seeing where you invested points. It would be confusing to see that you have a companion that was a "Cleric" but that you had invested all your points in warfare since you got them.
I hope this clarified it for you.
And if you really want to know, you can back track from skill points to presets using this chart: https://www.reddit.com/r/DivinityOriginalSin/comments/70h66r/dos2_default_classes_chart/
But again, it wound help you if you invested in different skill classes after leveling up and you didn't remember anyway.
