I've just walked out of Fort Joy, and I'm 25% of the way to Lvl 7. He must have missed a lot.
What the hell? I did every quest I could find and even went out of my way to look for more XP and only got to level 7. That was on tactician. Maybe it gives less XP?

Pretty sure the XP is the same.

Did you find the dozen or so voidling creatures that give 1000XP each? I didn't on my first play through that area. They made a huge difference obviously.

I think I did everything I could at the fort, I even killed everyone down in the Arena - cos I failed to pickpoted the lady down there.

Just about to enter Gargoyle Maze. Just this, then Alexander I think - but I'm 5% of way to Lvl 9:

I just breezed through this battle at level 7 (almost 8). I'd pretty much done EVERYTHING on the island so my team was fairly geared out. The advice on splitting them is solid. After you took out the initial two shriekers, go right (instead of straight) and take out the ones in the next room. That wraps around into an alcove with a door above where Alexander is, send someone in to trigger the fight (get an early attack in) and then run back out tot he area outside the door. It will take some time for everyone to get there (and I found the one mage in the far back of the room and one of the archers didn't come out at all during the main battle). When the worm comes in, several of Alexander's group will target it, during that time I target them and grind them down (I found the worm less of a pain then they were). Finally, I killed the worm then ran inside and finished off the last archer & mage. I tried this fight at Level 6 and it was VERY hard. Considering what's coming in Act II, I would strongly advise getting level 7 before you leave Act 1.

I remember being on lvl 8 at that fight in Tactician. I especially remember trying to get to lvl 8 before fighting Slane, which was lvl 9. You definitely missed a lot. For example, other companions' quest. Yes, you can temporarily separate from your current companions and then do their parts before getting back to your old party. And then there is exp from fighting Slane, exp from finishing gargolyle maze the proper way, fighting the 3 necromancer, exp from killing harmless silent monks, exp from killing Migo AFTER helping him (if you have the heart of evil, anyways), exp from saving black cat, exp from saving the pigs and then save them again, etc a few more quests that are easy to miss...

Yeah I didn't do all of the companion quests. I saved Slane instead of killing him, but that probably gave the same XP. I skipped the maze because I had Braccus' gear and got teleported straight to the entrance of the building. Didn't kill monks.

Killing Slane gives a lot more exp than saving him because the fight was supposed to be a real challenge, hella better loots too.
Braccus's gear was a bait to make you miss epic rewards, side loots and exp from that maze.

If you have teleport you can solo kill the Geist if you pull it back far enough. Then teleport Alexander out the front with the shriekers then when the worm spawns flee combat but keep one of yours in combat but hidden so they focus on the worm. That's how I did it

Well in that case that's a flaw in the game. Every approach should give equal XP; otherwise, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RPG. I shouldn't have to consider changing the way I complete a quest because one gives more XP than another. The reward should be the same. Loot is one thing, but XP at the very least should be the same. This game takes pride in having multiple approaches, but then some are inferior to the others? That's a flaw to me.

If you want to make the fight super easy.. everyone stand near where the shriekers are located and you just teleport Bishop Alexander to where you are and simply gank him..

Yes, I 100% agree to this. That is actually why I prefer the way Mass Effect handled XP (IIRC). Enemies gave no XP whatsoever, so if you talked some enemies out of fighting you or something, you didn't miss any XP. You only got XP at the end of quests for completion.

Yep, Pillars of Eternity also. Another thing you can do is make the pacifist quest reward equal to what you get from the quest + killing the enemies.

Sure it's a flaw, in your eyes. The truth is that this game is far from a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RPG. It's popular for breaking away from the box here and there.
People maybe unhappy with it but I, for once, look at it differently. May looks like a flaw to you but you havent fought Slane the fight is tougher than Alexander and Void Worm combined so imo, it deserves the extra reward.
Also, think about it, what is a bigger experience between handing a dragon a wand or fighting it to the death?
Though, if you wanna be fair, maybe we should also count the exp form fighting Radeka with intention to save Slane even though you can kill both Radeka and Slane? That should evens things out a bit.

And, as to avoid being off topic, the fight with Alexander is much easier when you avoid talking to him and just teleport him from afar into an ambush, that shoudl give you a turn or two before his minions swarm you. Kill him before they do and they will be too busy with the worm to fight you. While they are busy killing each others, kill them both.

Changing the difficulty to explorer fixed everything for me.
