How to build around spears?
I've noticed spears scale off finesse, in contrast to the other two handed weapons which scale off strength. Alot of the game's skills scale off of certain attributes, and the only skillset that uses finess extensively is Scoundrel, who in turn requires daggers to use. This leaves spears in a weird place. Other 2-handers can just dump into strength, and benefit from warfare skills, while spear users dont get that luxury. You could split your stats, and considering the uses of Polymorph for most characters, this is a feasible task but it may not be worth it in the long run. If I want to use a character with spear capabilities, what build would make this work?

determine if you mostly do ability damage or auto attack damage.

if you mostly auto attack then go for finess as your primary

if you mostly use skills from warfare then go for strength

also do still put a point into archery and scoundrel skill trees. you get 3 skills from archery that don't need a bow (buff weapon, jump and heal) and like 3 or 4 from scoundrel (AP borrow, jump, sleep).

Warfare skills scale off the weapon you're holding. So, if you have a spear they say "scales off finesse", if you have a warhammer they say "scales off INTELLIGENCE" etc.

So you can make a finesse warfare character. Also, this is how warfare(warhammer) + necromancy is viable, because both scale off intelligence and do physical damage.

finesse, 2-h, warfare

not sure what there is to wonder about. read the skill descriptions.

Now Ive been doing some research into whether the weapon skills were worth investing points in and i found an old post here that talked about after reaching a point investment in a skill like say warfare of geomancy that allows you to learn the spells you want that you would be better off investing those points into polymorph.

As investing in polymorph grants you 1 stat point per point of polymorph. So as an example for your spears instead of investing a point into 2h invest in poly then use your stat piont to pump finesse. thus increasing all finesse weapon dmgs so if you needed to for a fight you could pick up a bow and bang out dmg from afar as well.

Or for magic users spend that poly stat point on inteliigence and increase spell dmg across the board as opposed to only fire or geo for example.

So im wondering is this still a viable way to do it or?

I wouldn't trust any "old" information at this point; since the game is brand new, more than likely if what you're looking at is old then it's beta info and a lot's changed since beta.

I can't tell you what's powerful or not in terms of poly and spears

what I can tell you is what I know because I have used it and that is:

shields are OPAF
necro is a good subclass for almost any role
necro + hydro + warfare = unstoppable tank/off-healer
ranger dps is bonkers later in the game

if it's a post before sep 14 then it's irrelevant. character stats are way worse now than they were before. (finess doesn't give dodge, str doesn't give armor, int doesn't give mag armor etc.)
