Treated Like Cattle - Cows Have Fled - Solved
Well, first time I encountered this quest I drunk the potion. That was a bit of a scare and a laugh at the same time.

Anyway, next play through... I knew what to do. Make a second potion, don't consume the first and save both cows!

Upon crafting the second potion and returning to the cows, my journal got updated and closed with "the cows have fled the paddock"

What did I do wrong? Am I not suppose to save both? I remember being able to give 1 potion to 1 of them as I didn't have both potions at the time.

EDIT - SOLUTION:
Okay... So, the scarecrow fight near the witches house (not Alice Alison)
The main guy in that fight has "terrify aura", this seems to reach all the way to the cows and causes them to run.

Do not fight that scarecrow that tries to make you sleep until the cows are cured.

If you kill alice before doing the quest as soon as you go to her basement (which is dumb as ♥♥♥♥ because she drops the basement key) the quest auto fails and the cows leave for no apparent reason. Happened to me too and it's dumb.

I thought of this, but Alice is still alive and kicking. I haven't even entered Cloisterwood yet, as I wanted to save the cows first.
Cows are scared of me healing them T-T

I've seen some people reporting this bug as well.

In my case, Geraldine didn't want to take the potion I crafted and I couldn't finish the quest.

There are a few broken quests like this.

I don't think this is a bug. The quest closed with an update of "the cows have fled". That would be the most bizzare bug ever, as that text has been entered by the devs as a possible ending to the quest.

I'm just curious what the condition is that causes them to flee.

Did you enter the witch's house before or after talking to the cows?

I entered the house, grabbed the potion.

Talked to the cows, said when given the option on who to cure i chose "i'll think about it" - probably the issue here

Read the book from the frog with fane to learn the recipe

Found that damn mushroom to craft a second potion

Crafted the potion, got an update on the log...

Went to cure the two of them, and as I arrived, get another update stating they've fled.

My best guess is saying "i'll think about it" instead of curing one of the two on the spot, causes them to run away after you leave the immediate area.

I just wanted to cure both at the same time to avoid the quest closing after healing one.
Mistakes made.... :(

But key lying near her house. Even if you don't meet her.

^ yeah. there is a key about 5meters from her front door. Just hold ALT.
Or lock pick.
