Can't seem to Ascend with other party members (spoilers)

Just beat the game, I have a save right before dealing the final blow on the last boss. However, when the game gives my character a chance to ascend it only allows the 2 characters I started with to ascend and not the other 2 party members I picked up through the journey. If I refuse to ascend with those 2 characters it just forces me into to fight with my 3rd party member (red prince) without letting me go ahead with him ascending and my 4th char (lohse) never gets the option at all.

Is this intended or is something wrong here?
