Custom Character vs Premade Origin Character
Is there a difference? Which way is the game story most enjoyable? Does it matter?

It certainly does matter. Origin charakters come with their own dialogue options, where you can respond to things in charakter (but can also egnore them and instead answer how you otherwise would), have their own quests associated to them and in general are an amazing adition. The only downside is that the source skill custom charakters get by default outclasses every origin charakters soure skill by a massive margin.

You will witness their stories develop by proxy but you won't be able to control them directly or influence their decisions as you can with your own character.

IMO the game is meant to be played as an origin character, at least your first time thru, to get the full experience. Yes, besides Fane they all have pretty beat source abilities (Fane has easily one of the best abilities in the game), but it's not like you need those origin source skills. You'll get more, far more powerful source skills throughout the game.

If you're worried about customization, you can customize just as much on an origin character as you can on a custom EXCEPT for: their name, their voice acting, and their tags (noble, jester, mystic, etc).

Well I guess il have to play thru it multiple times so far i like most of them as companions except for the dwarf and human guy :steamhappy:

Yes there is a difference, and yes it matters. With a Custom character, you get one of the very best skills in the game, Dome of Protection, which performs crucial functions which you can't get to the same degree & proficiency from anything else in the game.

Because this game is horribly designed, if you don't take a Custom character, then you are permanently locked out from having any possible access to that skill.

So basically, either you take Custom, or else the game drastically lessens your power/ gimps your party in comparison to the next player who did take Custom and thus has a great skill that you don't have and never can have (unless you start the game all over again and choose Custom next time).

Of course, the devs could easily fix this problem by patching the game and allowing Dome of Protection to be a purchasable skill, yet for some inexplicable reason, they won't.

Or if you really feel you need access to Dome of Protection, you can hire a mercenary from Sergeant Zrilla on the Lady Vengeance any time past Act 1.

But that would make this entire tirade null and void, so of course you wouldn't acknowledge that.

Okay but my question was mainly for Story differences like dialogue options and the outcome of those options not Combat. Unless you are trying to say some skills affect the story?

Skills dont affect combat, just egnore the rambles of this guy, he does nothing but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the game. The first time i saw him in this discussion forum, he was complaining about choises that he made in dos2 having consequences, calling it "game breaking" that, a dumb choise he made in a sidequest (piss off a god) didnt lead to the best ending in a different sidequest, involving the same god.

For role-playing purpose I prefer to make a custom character. I found it more interesting to discover the origin characters by having them as companion. You can talk to them and they will explain their backstory. They all have interesting dialog as companions and I feel you don't start with enough info to really identify as those characters.

The only one I played as was Lohse and depending on the choices you make you can have a very hard time finishing her quest as a main character (the consequences of a certain decision is much more crippling if she is the main character). Keep saves before making important decisions.

Yeah, playing as an Origin character means you get to experience their questline from a more intimate perspective, but you also miss out on a big chunk of the excellent voice acting for the Origin character you're playing as, as well as the 'canon' portrayal of their personalities. I prefer a Custom character for this reason, and also to be able to play as race/gender combinations that aren't offered in the current Origin character lineup, Female Lizard specifically.

I agree im playing a custom character now and I like seeing how the origin characters react to me and certain things my character says and does.
