Issue with Chaining and Unchaining Companions
This started in Arx after the fight with Isbeil. I had unchained companions and when I tried to rechain them one of the portraits would disappear. Finally my main character's portrait vanished and I had to reload an earlier save to get them all back. Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you use mods? I had the same issue in the Arena of One (when you win the race to the Wellspring and all your party is separated) when using "Initiative fix" mod, chaining, unchaining didn't work well and the portraits were gone and back when shuffling with them manually. Getting rid of that mod fixed it, didn't have to load a previous save, just left them unchained (all portraits must be visible though), saved the game, exited to the main menu, disabled that mod and loaded the game, then everything worked again.
It might have something with the load order, but I'm no expert on that, so I rather disabled that mod, better going with the vanilla initiative, than loosing party members.

I do use mods but they have all been in since I started this run. The only one that updated recently is the LeaderLib mod which I really don't use anything in it so I think I will disable.

Recently the LeaderLib mod started to act strangely, I am always using it, as it claims to be crucial for some other mods to work correctly, but whenever I launched the game lately, it kept uncheck itself in the mod options, only did it when launching the game, not by loading a save and then quitting to main menu (that way it's checked).
But I wouldn't bet on that the chaining/unchaining issue is it's fault. Are you using some other mods, that could perhaps alter the party in some way? I'm using "Party Size Evolved", but that seems to work well and I didn't use it back then, when trying the "Initiative fix" mod (that broke chaining for me).

I do have that mod but again haven't used it. Maybe I will disable it.

Which one, the "Party Size Evolved" or the "Initiative Fix"? it is possible, that the mods activate themselves. If you want to make sure, they won't, then find the mod in "C:\Users\<your account>\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition\Mods", find it and delete it, it won't show up in the ingame mod section anymore and won't activate on it's own. There's also a Steam mod folder somewhere, but to be honest, there's lot of stuff there, so it won't be easy to find the right mod in there. But the folder in Documents should do the trick, for me it did.

Hi, i started having this problem and it's making the game unplayable for me. It does it every time i try to chain back someone to my main character. I can make every companions appear again but not my main. Also he is then gone from the skills menu, inventory etc, like completely gone, eventhough i can still control him. And this despite the fact that i'm not using any mod.

I've tried loading earlier saves, disabling the few gift bags things I had, the problem always comes back and it's litteraly gonna make the game unplayable;(
