Knights, Rogues, Wizards, Enchanters, and Shadowblades are all default classes that are great out the gate. There are plenty of more meta custom builds you could find guides for online, but you could reasonably copy those starter builds' stat distributions for the entire game, and get through the whole game with no trouble.

Ranger, Wayfarer, Conjurer, and Fighter are all passably built, but they all feature some useless stat investments.

Battlemage, Inquisitor, Cleric, and Witch, meanwhile, were clearly made by people who have no idea how to play the game.

TL;DR: Customizing your class is obviously the best choice, but Knight, Rogue, Wizard, Enchanter, and Shadowblade work fine if you're in a rush, and Ranger, Wayfarer, Conjurer, and Fighter work decently if you're feeling brave.

I chose a random character, but i still don't know where to begin in the game..

Have you played RPGs like this before?

Basically, you need to behave how you would if confronted with this sort of situation in real life. You're alone on a prison island, unarmed and unarmored, with no allies, and with your Source powers locked away. You should avoid picking fights with armed/armored enemies and focus on finding gear and allies to bolster your chances. Theft is a great way to help this process along. Once you've got your feat under you, you can start worrying about optimal builds and such.

"Class" doesn't mean the same in this game as in other games. All it governs is your starting stat allocation, which is customizable anyway. Don't worry too much about it. Before long, you'll have the opportunity to respec anyway.

Assassin(Shadowblade). Grab two knives and get enemy's back and you will hear how you character laugh. If you use it well you can easily kill a boss within one turn.

All of the basic builds are easy to play. The hard part for new players is figuring out how to build them well.

first character is just a burn ......use it to learn ... you are going to delete it in less that 2 days :) and start again thinking you know better now. and you will ...

Keep it fun don't do a tactical run yet...
I like to keep the party small Duo... (both can be lone wolf)
I like to have both be undead so that i can feign death with both and break combat at will
I prefer Geomancy with scoundrel and Necro Scoundrel as my team but hey do your thing...

It's fun ... don't go using guides too fast...

After playing this game for over 200 hours now, I wish my character was a sword and shield Fighter with high persuasion, strength and health.

It would just make the game so much easier to play when it comes to combat, dialogue, and being the pack mule.

I hate switching characters all the time while on the approach and for other menial tasks.

The game is tedious enough. I don't need another 30 hours of playing swap meet.

I have no idea why you'd think this after 200 hours. Sword+Shield fighters with high health are among the most useless builds in the game. Every character should be able to hold their own offensively, aggro isn't a mechanic you can effectively abuse, and constitution is the single worst attribute in the game by a wide margin.

Can second that... sword and shield builds offer absolutely nothing to the team that other builds can’t offer as well and the other builds will do so much more. Strength itself is already the weaker of the three main attributes to begin with. Going with the weakest weapon setup as well doesn’t help the situation.

Sword and Shield can be good, if your build never ever uses the weapon to attack.

If you're playing something like a Necromancer using a one-handed sword for stats and a good shield for defense and Shield Throw, sure. But the RPG archetypal sword+shield tank fighter is very weak in DOS2.

Even then, what do you get from strength weapon and shield that you can’t get from dagger and shield? Because dagger and shield offers the entire scoundrel skill line as well as more mobility, damage, CC and balanced armor.

Fang of the Winter Dragon :)
Maybe I should be more precise. Sword and Shield can be good for mages in act 1.
