No response from Amadia when praying at the altar

I've made it to the altar of Amadia on the Nameless Isle, and I get nothing when I pray – "all you can hear is the chirp of birds." What did I miss?

You need to go further to the knight of amadia. After speaking with her, the altar works.

also be careful not to get the puzzle solution from either alexander or the sallow man. doing so, ends the sub quest for praying at each altar

Ah, this explains it. It wasn't clear to me that these were mutually exclusive.
