In general focusing your 'main' stat and just putting everything toward that tends to work best.
So for a rouge. FInness/dex is focused stat. pair of daggers and alot of mobility/back stab/sneak tactics.... Giving damage and a chance to reposition or run....
If magic is your thing. You want to go deep on intelligence... getting hydro skills and crowd control effects spammed alot to prevent enemies getting to hit you... which may take some experience as you gotta break through the armor to apply most status effects and reposition to force enemies to come to you or your traps.
There eventually comes a point you can re-spec your character and try to max out what your capable of... I'd just focus on having fun with it as the game lends it self to replaying a couple times!
