Co-op can be chaotic, with 4 different wills pulling in different directions, difficulty getting playdates scheduled, differing interest in continuing to play, and so on. For example I've specced into Persuasion on my character, but since everyone runs around according to their own wills we get to use persuasion checks rarely since we can't cooperate well enough around it. Similar regarding Bartering and similar skills. And people start conversations all over, making it hard sometimes to keep up with the different story lines.
Solo is just as fulfilling, and you don't have to deal with the above. The only negative being that you 1) have to manage skills, builds and inventory for 4 characters rather than 1 or 2; and 2) well, multiplayer can be quite fun too..!
All this said: both have their advantages, and solo is a lot of fun. It can feel overwhelming to learn at first since there's a lot of skills and builds to learn, but just dive in head first. You won't regret it.
if you don't like managing more then one character you can also just go with just one, it's more difficult because you always outnumbered in combat but with the lone wolf perk and some thought put in your strategy it's doable.
You don’t have bots to be clear- you control any other party members in combat and how or what skills they level, equipment used etc
You can take Lone Wolf as a talent which balances the difficulty with stat boosts:

The devs planed for a maximum party size of 2 but if you know the game well enough you can complete the game in a party of 1, going over the 2 member max will remove the associated bonuses until such times as the party number is reduced again.
