Worth playing alone
Hi everyone!

Considering picking this game up since it's on sale and I've been on the fence about getting it for a few years. It's not the price that concerns me as much, but rather the gameplay. Not sure if I'll find it fun. I know there's co-op, however I'm planning to play it alone mostly. Is it worth getting for a single player play-through? Is the campaign/story engaging for a mature player?

(somewhat) similar games that I've enjoyed: ES4:Oblivion, Witcher 3, Gothic 3.

Yes, definitely. I'm playing it both as a co-op with 3 friends and solo.

Co-op can be chaotic, with 4 different wills pulling in different directions, difficulty getting playdates scheduled, differing interest in continuing to play, and so on. For example I've specced into Persuasion on my character, but since everyone runs around according to their own wills we get to use persuasion checks rarely since we can't cooperate well enough around it. Similar regarding Bartering and similar skills. And people start conversations all over, making it hard sometimes to keep up with the different story lines.

Solo is just as fulfilling, and you don't have to deal with the above. The only negative being that you 1) have to manage skills, builds and inventory for 4 characters rather than 1 or 2; and 2) well, multiplayer can be quite fun too..!

All this said: both have their advantages, and solo is a lot of fun. It can feel overwhelming to learn at first since there's a lot of skills and builds to learn, but just dive in head first. You won't regret it.

The game is very playable in SP if that's your bag. I'm just shy of 900 hours in game and I'm about to do MP for the first time.

After 900 hours myself, I really struggle to have as much fun in co-op as I do solo. I dunno if it is just the lack of control of the team setup or the other player doing things differently than I would, but I typically finished solo runs, something I didn’t typically have drive to do in multiplayer nearly as much.

about the first con you can play solo or duo with a bot with lone wolf talent and without worrying much you can still beat the game right?

100% with 600+ hours of play Solo and MP it's great. Music is top story is interesting and you also have different origin stories for the origin characters you can choose.

if you don't like managing more then one character you can also just go with just one, it's more difficult because you always outnumbered in combat but with the lone wolf perk and some thought put in your strategy it's doable. :lunar2019wavingpig:

we started this game as 4 player coop and it was massive chaos. i suggest you finish it once as solo and then head to either 2 player lonewolf coop or 4 player coop. there are lots of replayability options and ofc we didn't know that when we started. you can even slaughter every single npc in game or refuse to do some of the main quest objectives and yet complete the game, i believe.

You don’t have bots to be clear- you control any other party members in combat and how or what skills they level, equipment used etc

You can take Lone Wolf as a talent which balances the difficulty with stat boosts:

The devs planed for a maximum party size of 2 but if you know the game well enough you can complete the game in a party of 1, going over the 2 member max will remove the associated bonuses until such times as the party number is reduced again.

I loved playing this game solo and co-op. It's definitely more mature/dark fantasy and characters/story are interesting and engrossing. Some people are turned off by the turn-based combat (there are tons of threads in the BG3 forums of how much it's a blight on the series), but if that doesn't deter you then you're in for a treat (very fun/tactical). Learning curve is a bit high if you haven't played a game like this, so that's something to look out for if you don't want to invest too much time (campaign is around 100 hours casually for a newcomer).
