Wtfs with these animals following you around on the first island?
The Bone cat with the squirrel* and the black cat. like i kind of get the black cat, seems as if its quest related, and you can't shoo it away like the Cat squirrel thing, but seriously WTF,
Are these things like stupid strong later in the game or are they just ..useless pets following you around. i don't get it.
Edit: i'm new to the DOS series so i'm not sure on the significance of these animals if any.

You need the pet talk talent to figure out what is up with them. The squirrel is actually a necromancer on a quest to save the world and follows you throughout the game. The cat just gives you the ability to summon him as a pet if you can keep him alive through Fort Joy.

Is that all? i figured the cat was owned by some powerful wizard or something and i'd meet him/her eventually and there'd be like a quest involved or something significant. is that all? thats a little disappointing. is there a way to get rid of the cat? i don't want it following me though. like hey i like cats irl i have 3 but..i'm kind of doing a Lone wolf Necromancer ...idk "anti hero"???? kind of thing and i don't really want animals following me around or anyone for that matter. like..what good is the cat besides just an extra target to attract aggro away from my dude?.

The cat is a nod to a character in DOS1 who spoke in rhymes, but overall pretty insignificant. If you escape the fort without the cat dying you get the ability to summon it or send it away. The squirrel, actually a DLC thing, will on occasion give you recipes for Skillbooks. Also you're stuck with the squirrel even if it dies, it follows you in spirit form

You can tell the squirrel to ♥♥♥♥ off.

The cat as a summon has an ability to switch locations with the caster alongside leaping ability so you can use the cat to relocate the avatar to a high ground or in general safety.

Otherwise, hot trash

If your a summoner the cat actually has decent stats. It doesn't do much damage but has pretty high HP. Then with it's jump ability and ability to switch places with it's master it can be useful, though admittedly I have never actually used it.

so, its situational ability then, hm, yeah i'd rather just use ap to do damage or ♥♥♥♥ up the enemy, or hell summon an incarnate or something that actually can do decent damage, and can't you do that with incarnates as well?

Never underestimate the value of having an extra pet out there just as a distraction. Ifan's wolf can be great for that even if you are not a summoner. And if you are a summoner and your incarnate dies the cat can be a backup summon while incarnate is on cool down.

It's not any better than any of the other summons but if you are a summoner it has decent stats. There is a mod in the gift bag that turns the cat into just a regular World of Warcraft style pet that follows you around and just looks cute.

There is literally no reason to summon the cat if your incarnate dies instead of a hungry flower, bone widow, fire slug etc

Unless you don't have those spells. You get the cat pretty early on.

The only real use of the cat summon in my opinion is you summon it before combat and take your turn normally, then when it gets a turn you can use it to swap places away from danger. Jump into melee range to use certain spells or get the most out of melee attacks or something, then have the cat swap you out before that enemy gets their turn to melee back. If it does, the cat soaks the damage for you. I wouldn't waste the AP to summon him in combat though. He's only useful if you really try to make the best use of him as you can, but it tends to be a lot of planning and effort for meagre reward.
