Lucky Charm loot function specifics....
Hey guys, I'm seeking some info from some of the old pros that play this game.

I've been running series of tests on the same set of 5 crates, 8 jars, 5 barrels for the Luck stat, while looting, and oddly enough, out of ten attempts i have had zero triggers on the barrels/jars and a success EVERY TIME on the crates. This should not be possible, in fact, it hasn't been up this point. Still early game and the character with the Luck stat only has three luck.
So these are my questions.

Is the luck stat BS and loot is predetermined but will only trigger if you have at least one point in Luck?

Do certain areas in game have higher luck trigger chances?

Do certain loot containers (such as crates for example) have higher success chances than others? and if so, why do these five crates trigger a Luck drop, every time?

Could the Lucky charm item data be zone/area based and in fact not loot container based?
Meaning, Lucky Charm skill check happens when you load an area and not when you open a container. That would certainly explain why the same five crates Proc a item every time when load and try again.

Any thoughts guys...
Would love to know everything i can about this mechanic.

Wiki
"Lucky charm can proc on essentially any lootable object, from crates to barrels to fish carcasses. It is unclear if the type of object being looted affects the proc chance or loot quality."

This is why I hate Wiki. Too many untested assumptions, very few specifics, and far too often it is just flat out wrong.

Now wiki says fish carcasses, does that also mean Lucky Charm can proc on people/creatures you kill? I have yet to see that happen...
Based on my looting 90% of act 2 while holding on to 14 Lucky Charm on more than a couple of runs, I think I figured it out.

Loot quality is increased by the stat being higher, not the loot frequency. LC of 1 or 2 will just get you some gold, but lucky charm over ten almost always gets you purple gear. The level is determined by the area looted, so searching in bloodmoon island gives level 15 gear, and looting the town square gives level 9 gear.

As far as the same crates triggering each load, I'm not sure if it's a set every x number of opened containers triggers it, or if it's determined when the area is loaded up. I never bothered with that super fine detail because it was clear that higher levels didn't affect how often it triggered. I suppose if you really wanted to test that out, save as soon as you get a LC loot, then count how many containers it takes to get another. Then reload, enter a new area (something you'd likely have to do early in an act or specifically avoid a loaded in zone) and count the containers there. Then return to the original spot and count again, using the same order from before.

But in the end, since you can't really affect the frequency, it shouldn't matter much.

Hmm, I havnt thought of the "every X containers" possibility yet. It just might be that.
Very helpful. Thank you.
I'll give your suggestion a try :)
also in terms of actual loot there is a pretty specific loot table that i've noticed. After playing the game a few times over it seems that the same area will have the same loot table of possibilities and the higher the luck the better quality it'll be. I swear ive seen the same loot in the same specific area during replays.

That could very well be the case.
Out 20 attempts of looting those five crates it dropped an identical dagger five times, wand three times, and ring four times, having three lucky charm.
However, i equipped a shield that had lucky charm on it increasing my skill to four, and it opened up rare item drops. None of the same items dropped after.
Also the crates didnt drop something every time. I was wrong. It just took twenty attempts before it didnt drop anything. One on fifteen and eighteen. So two out of twenty dropped nothing, which is pretty nutty lol.
Very high drop chance at this spot for what ever reason.

Edit: Also want to add that that since i increased my Lucky charm from three to four the drop rate for barrels went from zero out of twenty, to four out of five. interesting.
if you reload, I believe the same containers will proc items. I forget the way it works specifically, but there's a sort of "seed" or something that generates at some point that'll pick what will or won't proc. There's ways of resetting it and changing it though. I don't know the details but I read about it awhile ago.

Ooh, this helps.
That explains a lot.

The seed could be effecting % drops as well then. I had a rare wand drop ten times in a row.
Ill try messing with resets on my next Lucky Charm encounter.
Thanks for the input Chaoslink :cozydarkseer:
Yeah, like I said I don't remember specifics, but someone tested it awhile ago and that was something like what I remember from the thread.
Searching for the thread I didn't find the one I remembered, but here's a few posts... Some of this might be out of date given that one thread was a 2016 one and the other 2017, but in the event this helps at all...

"the game is currently using seeds so save scumming doesn't work."

"From my testing it seems there is no difference between lucky charm 6 and anything higher than that. I saved before going into a defined crypt on blood-moon island (with vases) and did it with 0 (just basic loot) and 6 (2 epics, 1 legendary) and 11 (with food perk) (2 epics, 1 legendary) it was always in different vases too, the saves don't have a seed or anything. So the *chance* to find stuff doesn't change, the skill seems to literally change what loot-tables these vases have and nothing else. The region you are in changes what level the items have btw. At lucky charm level 1 I still found 3 items in the vases in that crypt. Meaning, lucky charm 1 to 6 gives same chance for a "loot explosion" (I think it's 15% btw) and each level in it gives you a better loot table.

So from my tests
# Lucky charm 6 is a mandatory skill - the amount of stuff you find is incomprehensible, you will have 40+ epic/legendary items in your inventory after a big fight.
# Lucky charm 0 is a death sentence
# Lucky charm 11 does nothing more than lucky charm 6
# Chance to find stuff does not increase after lucky charm 1, higher levels literally means you find "better" stuff (up to 6), but not "more often" than on 1.
# Lucky charm affects loot tables (this is important to understand why more than 6 doesn't do more, there are no loot-tables for lucky charm 7+)
# Boss loot tables are affected too, meaning you can literally get 3+ items extra at lucky charm 6 on boss loot, if Larian made the table for that anyway.

And like in D:OS 1, having this skill at 6 and opening ALL containers you can find guarantees you better loot. There is still a base chance for finding specific rarity items, but at Lucky charm 6 I don't think the loot-tables have anything below epic/legendary (though you can still happen on loot-tables with 4 gold or something, there is a chance involved there)"
