Mysterious symbol
I've read every page of the manual, which is loaded with self-priase and very little information. Nothing I read tells anything about the little crown that now appears in the top left of my character's portrait. According to the stats, I don't have enough points to level up, so it isn't that. I've picked up a follower, so I'm guessing that it means that I'm the main avatar in my group--correct? If not, then what?

Yes, the crown indicates a player-created character.

If you use the little trick of opening multiple instances of the game to create a full team like many people do, every character will have one. As Stabbey mentions, its aplayer created character. Simply means that they each have to do things that companions skip. They also don't trigger quest related conversations when you talk to their quest targets. Generally though, you'll only have one.

I always thought it was indicating the lead character.

For most people it does. But if you have a co-op game where you and a friend started characters from the beginning, you can go load into it solo and notice that both characters have it even playing alone. If you have a co-op game where a friend just randomly joined mid-game, only the main character from the start has one.
