In the vanilla game, he will follow you as a spirit and his story continues that way, no big deal. Although he will comment (if you have the Pet Pal talent), that you, his shiels, did an amazing job to keep him alive, which kinda breaks immersion. But there are Workshop mods (if you don't mind achievements), that can revive him.

There is also a mod on the Nexus that will allow you get achievements while using mods.

Good riddance he's dead, all he did was run into traps anyways!

This will buff the squirrel knight a little, so he'll have more life and better AI

And this one is the reviving mod, works for other pets, not just Sir Lora. It gives you a Pet Urn, that you can use to revive the pet, it's lore friendly.

I'm actually wondering, trying not to spoil it for myself, but how long do I have to keep sir following me before I complete his story? from the sound of it, it appears as if he is describing a giant meteor heading toward the planet and we have to stop it

which seems like it is going to be an epic quest spanning the entire game, am I right in my assumption?

p.s.

almost to the end of the first island and I have not had any problems keeping him alive so far.
enemies ignore him and his stats do improve as I level up. he has no physic armor but he does have magic armor and the couple of times he did walk on poison, he resisted it.

I even had no trouble keeping Bellegar's cat alive, except I had to reload once because a certain dickish magister killed him for no reason.
I reserved a special place in hell for that guy

They shoot the cat, because they are racist, as a black cat (wel afroamerican feline) he supposedly brings bad luck. Some morons just believing that crap, some of those even work as Magisters unfortunately.

Regarding Sir Lora's story, the Great Acorn is just the squirrel version of the Void, basically both, you and the squirrel knight have the same goal. There is no actual meteor coming. So his story comes to an end with the main story.

I lost him on my last game during a battle in the Black Pits. I won't spoil it if you haven't been there, but if you have, you'll know there's very little safe ground to hide in. I cast the spirit vision, but it wasn't the same as having him around. I personally like him, he can make funny comments at various points throughout the game.

Anyway, I restarted for the 3rd time (various reasons), so now I'm keeping a closer eye on him.

Whether he's alive or an undead spirit makes no difference. He still follows you around, occasionally being helpful. The advantage of the spirit form is that he won't set off traps in your vicinity, which got old real fast. He is fun, though, w/ good voice acting.
