Trigger Spores not working

When I use Trigger Spores when someone is holding a Contaminated Spore (and not the flawed ones, real ones), nothing happens, even when I use it in range. Even tried to give it to the idle beggar in Driftwood, but nothing happens. I hear this is the way to get the gloves for the Contaminated gear set. Can I just move onward and not worry about this?
