Can't reach level 8 before final battle in act 1

Playing on PS4, but that shouldn't make a difference.
I can't beat the battle against the Bishop. Actually I was doing well until the worm showed up as well....
Anyway I'm lvl 7 and after googling the matter, I've read lots of posts that say you could and should be lvl8 before attempting.
Yet according to this guide: https://www.neoseeker.com/divinity-original-sin-ii/walkthrough I've done all the sidequests.
Is it incomplete or what am I missing? Should I go pack to the prison and kill all the magisters or something?

Yes, kill everyone if you want an easy time

Do quests, kill people, don't forget to escape if things go awry.

You don't want to kill literally everyone necessarily, but the magisters do need to die.

Unless something has changed, none of them carry through to the second act.

Anyone without armor doesn't give XP anyway and the extra XP the others do grant isn't really enough to be worth the effort.

Obviously you shouldn't kill Saheila (and probably by extension, her companions). No reason to kill the innocent, either, though some players get off on that. I don't care enough about xp to go that far, personally.

Me and a buddy kill pretty much did all the quests then kill everyone, even the quest givers.

The worm was my best friend when I fought the bishop. Granted, everyone of my group was dead or near enough that they were helpless. Ifan, my sole survivor did a tactical retreat up the stairs, resurrected loshe and the two of us had a few rounds to recover and cool down. I would have been ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if the worm didn't come to the rescue. I then proceeded to kill everyone, and the worm too.

I leave the island with lvl 9, so lvl 8 shouldn't be a problem at all if you didn't miss a lot of stuff.

the worm tends to pop up where characters are packed together, split up your dudes so only one gest hit, he might end up going for the magisters and fighting the fight for you
