When you start Act 2, it helps to do all the easier non-combat quests around Driftwood first, and try to steal/find/buy some better equipment. After that, there is a progression you should follow through the zone in order to fight enemies close to your level. Of course, a new player doesn't know where the right quests are and can easily wander into enemies far too difficult.

Edit - Another tip, a neat trick you can use throughout Act 2:
There is a drug den underneath the tavern in Driftwood. The bartender there will sell you special mixtures through her dialogue for 150 each. You use them by putting them in the big pipe thing right behind her, and the buffs last 50 turns. They provide +4 to con, wits, int, and +2 to ap which is huge. You can use all 4 at the same time.
So, you can put one of your teleporter pyramids right there at the bar. Whenever you're about to try a tough fight, you can put your other teleporter on the ground and warp back to the tavern. Buff your group, and then warp back to the fight you were about the start.
As long as you keep your gear updated and avoid large level gaps, you’ll be fine.
GREAT TIP!!!!
Then there's also lone wolf builds which don't care about levels at all because of double stats. You're basically always overleveled with that talent.
