As for builds, I always recommend a 2/2 team, where two characters deal magic damage and two deal physical. Archers are generally the consistently strongest as they have quite a bit of flexibility and always have high damage. Then I'd say Air/water mages take the next slot in terms of best as their CC is unrivaled and they are great at damage and support. However, depending on the difficulty you choose, being the best isn't everything.
However, this is your game. So instead of telling you what to build and how, I'd prefer you to give me an idea of what type of characters you would like to play, general class and which origin/custom character or race they'll be and I'll be happy to help offer ideas of how to tie them all together.
1) Fire Battlemage with Staff. [Best if used with a Lizard]
+3 Int
+1 Pyro - Get Ignition and Searing Daggers
+1 Poly - Get Bull Horns
Torturer first, Opportunist Second.
Use bull horns as a gap closer to wack people with your staff (Damage will be dependent on your staff's element). With torturer you can inflict bleed with bull horns and deal piercing damage, use searing daggers to burn enemies through magic armor lowering their fire resist.

2) Pure Support Summoner [Best if used with a Human]
Some Wits to go first and buff your party/make summons, rest of stats don't matter much.
+1 Summoning - Get Conjure Incarnate and Totem, 3rd could be Farsight Infusion
+1 Hydro - 3rd Could be Restoration
Glass Cannon and/or Pet Talk Talent in any order
Later on put 1 point in Pyro and Geo for Haste, Peace of Mind (Unless you have a ranger with PoM) and Fortify(Unless you have a tank with fortify). Also get armor of frost too (Unless you're making a Hydro mage)
Then max out Summoning, use your summons to support your party, if your party needs physical damage then create blood totems and incarnations, if it needs magic damage then summon on an elemental area. Remember to use Incarnate as a healer when summoned on water in a pinch and later on use infusions. Farsight Infusion with Power infusion stack so you can have an Incarnate that can do pretty much anything. Rallying Cry as healing works wonders.

3) Assassin [Best if used with Elf]
+3 Fin
+1 Scoundrel - Get Backlash
+1 Poly - Get Chameleon Cloak and Chicken Claw
The Pawn first, Opportunist second.
You get a free adrenaline at the beginning, get chloroform to support your mages.
Chicken Claw + Rupture Tendons is your bread and butter.

4) Spell Bow Necromancer [Best if used with an Elf]
***Haven't tested it yet***
+3 Int
+1 Necromancy - Get Mosquito Swarm
+1 Huntsman = Get Elemental Arrowhead and Ricochet
Hothead first, Savage Sortilege second.
Basically taking a melee necro and make him ranged. Flesh Sacrifice > Elemental Arrowhead > Shoot > Spells. Max out Warfare first so your basic attacks and necro spells deal more damage.
You can try Hydromage + Necro Rogue, decay with rogue and damage them hydro mage's healing. Good for hybrid parties.
Too lazy to write more(and edit), hope these help or seem fun.
I like the idea of a party of mages, though as I understand it that's not exactly the 'meta' right now. They don't all have to be traditional robe and pointy hat wearing types, but utilizing magic for the most part sounds interesting.
Thanks so much for the advice and information!
