Co-OP is fun but it's more lighthearted in that you just play wonky builds and mess with one another. I have yet to meet anyone who stuck with me to the end of fort joy, let alone the whole game.
Co-op is nice, but unless you're playing with a sibling, spouse, or a close friend who's really dedicated to seeing the game though with you to the end, you'll probably just end up being dropped or wanting to drop the other player.
Co-op vs single-player is a matter of taste. You can experience the full story and gameplay both ways.
