how does looting work?
One run through the starter ship i was sporting a staff and had a summoning book, another the best i found was an armour of frost scroll. I know there is fixed loot like the gold cup in the lab, and the pocket knife, but how does the "random" loot work?

Is it rolled when you enter the room? Enter the room for the first time?

If i, in theory, save before i enter a new area, can i load, walk in, loot the room, and re load and repeat if i dont like what i get?

I think you can. I've tested it where I reloaded a Lucky Charm box and it changes every time I reload. But I had to loot the boxes in the exact same order otherwise it wouldn't spawn. Not sure what that's about. But you can always save before the box and then keep reloading as the actual modifiers seem to roll when you touch the box. Because you can loot the whole the box and Lucky Charm proc it...then leave it for any amount of time (between Acts even) and the item will not change. Yes...I saved boxes between Acts hoping that the item level will "upgrade", but it didn't. XP

You can stand in front of the chest, save, loot and if you don't like the stuff reload and thus re-roll the loot, I think this works better on chests with multiple "better" loot

There are also a handful of preset containers that will always have the same stuff in them, and can only have additional items if lucky charm goes off. A few examples are the blood rain book in Orivand's room and a res scroll by Ricks on the starting boat in the bookshelf. So if you reload as described above and a container has the same stuff 2 or more times in a row, assume you're on a preset container. Not always obvious loot in those.

Is there an indication that a chest is preset? I know I've gotten stuff from the Ornate Chests what are quest related. They are invincible. But is it safe to ignore other chests? Like if you have enough money and don't want to loot anything, or maybe come back later if you need money. I know even Locked chests can have garbage in it.

with lucky charm decent enough there no such thing as anything lootable being worthwhile to skip even the smallest garbage can can have great gear. But skip if it annoys not huge deal.

Well, if you combo it with Thievery (not even prioritizing gold most of the time), it appears you can have near a million gold + tons of random crafting stuff + potions/scrolls/arrows by the time you past Act 2. I've found that this is complete overkill and there's like no way you'll need that much even if you have a Scrollmancer. I felt like I wasted so much time looting and selling and toggling Lucky Charm / Bartering gear and respecs. Not to mention all the inventory management (which I must say is a very "crude" interface for a Windows game).
