traders only drop level 1 books (in for joy anyway) upon death. there's little point in doing that unless you're either broke or your theivery level is too low.

in fort joy, wait until level 4, steal the level 2 books and then kill them so they'll drop the level 1s

its still not completely safe though. the aero vendor will end up dead through his own actions, and you won't always get every book he carried when you loot his corpse.

You should kill them at the end of the Act. The game will let you know when this occurs.

the devs worked it though so that you never get their full inventory on death. gawin for example had 6 books on him when he left the fort, and only had 5 on him when he died. luckily the missing book was blinding radiance, so it wasn't a huge loss

Well you won't get their full inventory but you'll get some of their inventory plus some exp as a bonus. it doesn't really make much sense but this game for some reason rewards mindless murdering of everything (with few exceptions) once you reach the end of each chapter.

You still get a pretty nice amount of loot either way. I think when I killed all of the traders at the end of Act II in my most recent game, I ended up with something like 100k worth of valuable skill books and high-quality items.

I think it used to be that you'd get more? I remember seeing traders dropping 10k+ in straight gold in earlier versions, but I'm guessing that was nerfed at some point.
