I finally have access to Source. How do I use it?
I came across the first of those source points in the swamp. How available are those in general? And can I acquire new Source skills, or am I stuck with that Maddening Song thing Lohse gets?

You cast source spells which is limited use. Then you have to refill source meter. Source bless is important. You will need to use on several pigs and levers. There are many other strong spells in the game learned via spellbooks that use source.

You'll have two chances in Act 1 to find a way to talk to your God ( Statues )
They will grant you a spell " Bless "
At level 9 onwards, with exception to 'chain lightning' spells will be on corresponding traders; but not all act 1 traders. Chances are you'll land in Act 2 and find them.

The books will be shinier than their normal counterparts and include squares/diamonds next to the circles for point cost, these indicate source cost.

Source becomes more and more available as the game goes on. In Act 1, it's pretty limited. In Act 2, there will be a location that enables to refill your source. At a certain point in the 2nd half of the game, you'll learn a way to acquire source from any dead body.

And yes, there will be times where you want to use Bless on pigs and levers :)

There's a source well in the room underneath the broken castle, where the rat that likes sharing stories hangs out. If you interact with it, it drips out a source puddle and is infinite.

Bless all the pigs!
I never found maddening song to be very handy.

I think there's much better source skills out there. For custom characters, protective barrier is very nice.

Also, as mentioned above, you'll unlock the bless skill soon enough. It's very handy because it lets you cure certain debuffs, as well as bless a surface. For example blessing a puddle of water makes it into blessed water which gives you a healing effect as long as you stand in it. blessing fire makes it holy fire which also heals you. blessing necrofire turns it back into normal fire.

Source will become more available as you progress and spells can have multiple source points worth of cost to cast in exchange for the power they unleash. Increasing your max source can happen in a few different ways which youll find out in act 2, but if you are curious... you can find items called source orbs which you can eat to increase your max source points you can hold

I'm only at act 2 right now, but you will have easy access to a source of well...infinite source you can easily return to at any time because its close to a way point shrine, so don't worry too much about running out. Its generally a good idea to refill whenever you use it since its free.

But yeah, dont worry about it for now. Bless stuff to make healing surfaces if you need to (different surfaces cause different buffs, like ice gives you a chance to get magic shell instead of HP which gives you magic armor back) or if you have characters with more useful source skills, use those when need be. In general though, for most fights, you can get by without using source in act 1

You can also get items with spells (some which deduct source i.e. mana) on it. If you find/buy them, it will arm it without a memory slot. Check the vendors often as sometimes you can get cool stuff and you don't need level 3 skill to use it. If you really wanted to, I guess you can equip the item as needed. It's like a scroll you have to equip, but provides some protection stats.
