Is it ok to have persuasion on a companion instead of main character?
So, I want to main as Fane but want to run him as a stealthy archer with sneak and thievery, and then take the red prince as my persuasion companion (since he gets a bonus to it anyway). Are there lots of conversations where my main character has to be the one talking or will I be able to use a companion for persuasion checks most of the time?

There are certain moments that are locked to your main char but those don't involve persuasion checks so you're going to be fine. Only exception to that are the origin quests which are locked to their repective char.

It's absolutely fine to have it on a companion. Just be aware that if you get yanked into a conversation in the world which has a persuasion option, you might not have the right characater in the lead. So save often or just accept the consequences.

How does the game determine who initiates the conversations? Is it random? or the closest character?

some npcs will talk to the first of your characters that they see...most you have to click on them to initiate conversations
