The main reason to get the game is to have a new campaign atleast for me thats how it is
Also fun is subjective.
If every players give you the one thing they enjoyed the most on DOS2, mine will the RNG.
which says if you have magic armor health remaining you don't get effected by magic effects
If you have Melee armor health remaining you don't get effected by Melee Orientated CC
But what I think is that the story in the second game is easier to grasp, to learn and understand about, like reading a book with a good beginning and evovles in a good timely fashion.
The first game alot of things comes at once, like the first time you touch that stone and teleports you to another realm with a talkactive imp. It's just too much that time.
Your companions in the 2nd game have also alot of personal story with alot of quests and content on their own.
And then there's also the ability to play as human, elf, dwarf, lizard or any undead variation of those four.
About "textwalls" there's a narrator on I think almost all text if it helps, and I think all conversations are voiced aswell.
Here is the main difference:
DOS 2
-DOS 1
----------
= 1
Therefore the difference is 1.
And... on a serious note or three:
1) There is no such thing as % chance for CC to work in DOS2. You have hit points (life). And you also have Physical Armor and Magic Armor. A piece of gear like a helm may have something like Physical Amror 15 Magic Armor 45. Add it all up and there's your defenses. As long as you have just 1 point of Physical Armor, you are immune to all Physical CC. As long as you have 1 point of Magic Armor, you are immune to Magic CC. When combat ends, both armor pools instandly regen back to full.
I hate that system. Makes the game too easy. You never have to decide if CC is a good idea or not since it is always either 100% success or 100% fail. That is not to say the DOS1 system is better. It is way to easy to get to guaranteed success on all CC abilities in DOS1. But this is defenitely a case of DOS2 being different, and still flawed.
2) Story is much better. Although there are still bits of humour spread throughout it does not have the 'campy' feel of DOS1.
3) Since you start out in a prison camp in DOS2 gearing up is actually a bit slower than in DOS1. But there is defenitely a much better balance between combat and walking and talking at the start, compared to DOS1.
Overall it is a better game than DOS1.
As for what else has changed... there's quite a lot. It's like DOS1 but with a much bigger budget.
Everything's smoother, story, combat, skills, progression, ect...
In contrast, DOS 2 has abysmally awful combat/gameplay and a much more boring/mundane/far less-varied world and enemies.
In some ways DOS 2 has a better story and characterization, however, the waters about that subject are also muddied because DOS 2's story has some major writing fubars in it.
Inventory is a mess in both games.
On the whole, DOS 1 is a vastly better game than DOS 2. But I agree that DOS 1's story and characterization are a little weak.
Except: that talent doesn't work for most statuses. Thus, the gameplay is still gimped by the terrible armor/combat system most of the time.
The implementation of "torturer talent" is metaphorically like placing a band-aid on a fatal wound. It does very little to address the actual problem. What they needed to do was fix the problem at its root cause, which is the terrible system itself that needs to be entirely scrapped (but that won't ever actually happen even though it should).
Dos 2 might be a tad darker .
