Lohse, quite unique and interesting story
Beast, standard dwarf stereotype, no flavour, but it might be just what you want, i like him.
Red Prince, the story itself is quite ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for me, but the character is also unique and can be interesting if you can witstand his annoying voice.
Sebille, typical rogue looking for revenge type of thing, by far the worst story wise since they changed it midgame and it looks like shes 2 characters in 1, they never fixed that, still its the only elf and her story really fits a rogue, it might also be what you want.
Ifan, the most hollywood typical story of them all he wont surprise you with absolutely anything, hes the edgy human that has a troubled past and now is a killer for hire, BUT his story fits insanely well with the main story of the game, i tend to allways bring ifan into the party, or play as him, even better.
Fane, unique, rich story, by far the best story, but immersion is going to be obliterated by the lack of unique dialogues in most scenarios, hes supposed to be an ancient being, still he speaks like if hes another ifan. If you can overlook this, hes probably the most interesting of them all.
Ifan as main should work fine, he is pretty blank personality wise.
edit: keep in mind that the protection dome spell (for custom chars) is much better than ifans wolf. so if you go tactician on your 1st run, you might want to go custom just for the spell :P
Sebille is great too, both she and the Prince are separate enough from the main story that their stories are memorable. I find linking companions to the main story hurts them more than anything as they only shed light on something you were going to do anyways.
Lohse is great, but definitely loses her appeal after the first time with her.
Fane is like Lohse, but with significantly less interaction and personality. His quest doesn’t really start until level 13 or so.
Beast... is a dwarf. Take that and roll with it.
Ifan is bland but generic. Some people like that.
As for you, choose custom if you want a race/gender combination not available like female lizard/dwarf or male elf. The important part is that you like your pick. Don’t invest 50 hours to get halfway through only to regret your pick.
Really feels like she was meant to be one. An Edwin/Safiya/Ammon Jero kind of deal.
