The Divine Order, led by Alexander the Innocent, and Dallis the Hammer his consultant (the two who executed the lizard in the beginning) noticed this, and decided to round up Sorcerers seperate from the mainland on an island called "Fort Joy", the island you´re on right now for using Source publicly.
Before the game starts, a cult called The Black Ring gathered a huge army of followers and attempted to summon an evil demon to destroy the world (or something). Lucian the Divine raises his own army to stop them (the divine is a sourcerer who is chosen by the gods to be a kind of god-leader on earth). He fights the Black Ring cult in the elven homelands and destroys them with deathfog. Unfortunately the death fog also wipes out the elves and their homelands, so there are almost no elves left in the world. They all died in the deathfog.
Lucian the Divine is dead and the Black Ring is defeated, but instead of peace, creatures called Voidwoken start coming from another dimension. They kill everyone and destroy everything in their path, often in horrific ways, so everyone is terrified and paranoid.
When a divine dies (like Lucian did) a new divine is supposed to ascend to divinity to lead the races of world, but none has ascended. The Divine Order believe Lucian's son, Alexandar, should be the one to ascend. He's also collared and imprisoned on Fort Joy, but he's also the leader of the Divine Order so he's not being treated like crap like the other prisoners - he's living in luxury.
The Divine Order declares that the Voidwoken are attracted to source magic, and sourcerers are allowing them to come into the world by using source magic. They decide that sourcerers need to be imprisoned on the island of Fort Joy and also collared with a magical collar that suppresses their source power. All over the world Magisters drag sourcerers away from their families and force them to Fort Joy.
And this is where the game starts for us. We have been captured, collared and sent to Fort Joy to be "cured" of source. As you escape from Fort Joy you'll find out what the cure is.
The original sin games are about the conflict between the void and the world (the void would like to wipe out the world entirely, demons and all) and tie that conflict to Source and eventually to the gods, Lucian and evetything.
