Exactly, I played him that way as well and it suits him way better imo. With a big ol' sword and badass armor he looks like he got over his past and grew up to become the hardcore man he should be.
I somehow dont like Ifan. Yes, I like his background and also his voice (no ♥♥♥♥), but he appears somewhat whiny to me. Come on dude, you got deceived and feel horrible because you accidentely became complicit in genocide-ish stuff, I get that. Now stop complaining and take bloody revenge like a real man!
Best companion is obviously Malady Sebille. Who wouldnt like a needle pointed at their throat? See.
Love Malady +1
My least favorite was Ifan, largely because I found Lohse superior to him in every way. She had the better source skill, a more interesting backstory and a more likeable personality. I wanted to like Ifan but I always felt like he was the weakest link in my party and made me question why I didn't recruit someone else instead.
How I rank them and how I built them:
1. Fane - Scoundrel/Warfare/Polymorph & Necromancer/Geomancer/Hydrosophist
2. Sebille - Summoner/Huntsman/Warfare & Scoundrel/Warfare/Polymorph
3. Lohse - Hydrosophist/Geomancer/Aerothurge & Warfare/Geomancer/Hydrosophist
4. Red Prince - Pyromancer/Geomancer/Polymorph & Pyromancer/Warfare/Necromancer
5. Beast - Warfare/Geomancer/Polymorph & Aerothurge/Scoundrel/Geomancer
6. Ifan - Summoner/Huntsman/Scoundrel & Warfare/Polymorph/Necromancer
Red Prince and FANE are the best, you intolerable meat bags.
Lohse breaks that as she is actually relatively interesting. I prefer other characters over her as once you know her story, it isn't as interesting, but she is still a fun character.
I was never a fan of Dwarves either, but after Total War Warhammer, I stated liking them as they fit my playstyle in the game and were fun to play. Since, I've lost a lost of that and actually like beast. His race and personal abilities are actually useful in a lot of builds too.
Red Prince, is the best. He has a unique personality that really fits who he is, his story doesn't connect to the main story (very important to keep things varied) and just fits the lore well. I also feel like his romance story has some of the best lines in the game. He can be hard to get to like for some people, but I feel like that personality is his best trait.
Sebille is like the Prince. Elven lore, but effectively the same reasons. The only thing I wasn't ahuge fan of was the lust for revenge, but that isn't so much a bad thing about her as it is personal preference.
Fane... I dunno. Too much about him seems lazy, convenient or inconsistent. He is entirely tied to the main story, so you are already going to do his story even without him, his presence only adds details you wouldn't know about otherwise. However, I don't feel this is justification for taking him along. The ONLY reason I use him is because he is useful from a combat sense. Play Dead, Time Warp, and just being undead make him powerful. However, I would never say to take him for his personality or story. The others are ALL better than him in this regard. Pay close enough attention to the main story and details in it, and you learn everything you need to know about Fane without ever having him around.
If you want to roleplay as Fane, then you're going to end up with everybody being suspicious of him and attacking him on sight - especially when everybody is nervous and on the lookout for evil creatures from the void. Imagine Fane meeting Magister Reimond at the docks in Driftwood. Reimond would instantly know there's something not right about this guy who thinks the handshake he just offered was a freakin mating ritual. "He's a voidwoken spy masquerading as an elf!"
I have never understood why people do this or think this way. I get the feeling that its due to complete misunderstanding or lack of knowledge of him or who he is. The above portion I quoted shows a great example of this. People assume too much and don't pay any attention to details about him, nor do they give him much chance.
He literally says in his origin that he was raised in the palaces of the forbidden city and destined to become the next emperor, suggesting he is of royal birth and already in line for the throne (maybe even THE heir to the throne).
Are you sure it's me that misunderstands?
But I did pay attention to his personality. He's my second favourite character after Ifan. I never do a playthrough without taking him with me. I got the impression that because of his noble birth and red skin, he was destined to be the emperor from the moment he was born, only losing it when he was found to be cavorting with demons.
