If it was a two-way bond it could still be useful on a tank to copy the healing of an enemy for the few fights where they have any notable healing, but as currently implemented it's just a wasted memory slot.
I didn't know about that limitation since I never used Soul Mate, but might it be useful on a character with a shield to use with shields up?
For 3 AP you can remove Stun/Knockdown/Petrify/Freeze, and then (since shield characters have way more armor than anyone else) likely give that unit a full armor restore. So it's still not super efficient, but at least on a warrior build it would give you a way to clear status and restore armor, with the benefit of restoring more than an un-invested fortify or armor of frost, at the cost of 1 more AP.
It does copy heals via lifesteal, so it's actually okay if cast by a character with high Necromancer. Still, health doesn't stop status effects, so it's no more than okay at most.
Soul Mate can also be combined with Arcane Stitch to fully restore magic defenses of two characters simultaneously... I did that once or twice.
