Since you can only steal once, its best to wait until you have an extra thievery point before stealing. Early on like that its often best to just wait it out and use what you find, only buying stuff when you're struggling. You level up too fast to upgrade gear frequently.

Just get Lucky Charm. I don't need to steal or pickpocket because I get so much extra cash from my Lucky Charm :).

Improvised Staves are good for early moneymaking. They use Long Sticks and Shells which are cheap/free. Long Sticks can also be crafted by combining logs (also cheap to buy) with a sharp object like an axe or dagger.

True enough, but if you hang onto all of that they'll be worth more as the game progresses. By act four, they're worth like 10x more than if you craft them in the beginning.

True, but by then, you'll have Lucky Charm or something leveled up and you'll have plenty of money to work with anyway. Plus there's always Charm Arrows.
