Fane can grant an extra turn, Ifan can summon a wolf etc. Non origin characters get a shield I think
That's not what the story says. Rather, they do that because a) Source magic causes endless swarms of Void Bugs to spawn in the world and b) they want to make an army of out of undead Source users.
This would help explain and enforce why people are afraid of source users.
It's essentially a separate type of energy that can be used independently or alongside of others. This will be explored a bit more as you progress through the game.
