That's not true, any companion is viable for this.
I've done 2 runs with this charater with Lone Wolf setup. You can easily recruit him without triggering the event at the gates :)
Also you get a talent at level 3, not 2.
Right, that part is easy. It's the event you get when simply recruiting Ifan that also gets you some XP. Not a huge deal, but not being able to allocate those level 2 ability points where you want them early game is a slight downside.
Actually, I am pretty sure you are getting level 2 as you land in Fort Joy right after the ship crashes :) Maybe it's just personal experience, but I usually try to maximize the items/XP gain on the ship since the Honour mode is kinda nasty in the beginning. Level 2 never gave me a talent, so I think it is level 3 when you gain it.
And after gaining lvl 2 you can easily make it to the main square, using the ladder to the right side from the fancy folks.
Also I do believe that this event gives you only 300 XP, which is not big enough to gain level 3 right away.
Party member comes in the same level as you are, so the only thing you need to do is to try and get some exploration XP. Just enough to get him LW talent and probably Executioner for your main one :)
But yeah, you are absolutely right - 2 ability points and a talent are a huge difference.
Also, if you do things right, you should hit level 2 ON THE BOAT. I don't know how you even make it to the fort joy square without hitting 2. And the second talent point is 100% at level 3.
There is another option.
Start a new Multiplayer game in LAN mode. When you get to character creation, browse to the game's folder and click the .exe to launch another copy of the game. Pick join Multiplayer and you will see your LAN game and you can join it.
Now you have 2 copies of the game joined and both at character creation. Finish creating both characters (and take Lone Wolf on both) and enter the game.
In the 2nd client (not the host) just press ALT-F4 to drop out of the game. Your 1st copy of the game automatically takes control of both characters.
You are now at the start of the game with your 2 custom Lone Wolf characters. Just play like normal from here on.
This method can also be used to create a full party of 4 custom characters to play in a single player run through the game.
