How to get local CoOp working at character creation?

I have:

DS4 (works ingame)
Xbox one (plugged in)

I start the game, hit X (DS4). Single Player > create new game > character creation screen

Nothing happens on the xbox controller even though its powered on. Both wired.

Pressing Start on the Xbox controller should bring up the profile list so you can select one, and after that switch to split screen mode in character creation. You'll need to have at least 2 profiles created.
If you start the game with the Xbox controller and get into character creation, does hitting the Options button on the DS4 get split screen co-op working?

Pushing Xbox one did nothing, I guess make a second profile then try again?

Yes. If a second profile doesn't help, can you start the game with the Xbox controller?

Figured it out, as some games require me to use the steam api for controllers (DS4 example) this made the xbox be ignored in the game.

Telling the game in properties in steam to force off for controller configs lets both work fine.
