Just play what appeals to you. Repeated because its important. If you plan to play a second time, just use what learn the first time to answer these questions for yourself the second time through.
If you have any issues beyond just this, feel free to ask. There's a lot to learn in this game. Like how tanks and healers are not really important, instead favoring more independent builds. As an example...
I am fan of sebille being in party. She has corpse eater ability that sort lets you see dead people's thoughts and unlocks a mix of random skills. Both I think are cool for a new player.
Other than that its more preference than anything. I tried having fane in my party but he kept dying or spent turns pretending to be dead, i felt he was a bit deadweight on my tactician party.
Fane explains... everything.
Red Prince gets you ambushed -- a ton. Kinda like adding a level of dif for some things.
Sebille opens and closes doors. Use with caution.
Ifan has funny scenes, but his plot bites him around certain people.
Beast is a RNG thing with Dwarves. Has least impact post act 2 until his special stuff.
But he's the basic human, I really enjoyed my first playthrough wiht him.
