Using a custom character at creation just means he/she won't have any real personality or interaction with others. I haven't actually done it that way, so I couldn't say for sure, but that's what it seems like it would be like.
I have already played the game twice with story characters; and I am only replacing the main character (me) with a custom one. One rather strong benefit I see it - outside of the obvious RP value - is that the default Source skill for custom character seems stronger or at least more useful than many of the story variants. And yeah, I am aware that I will miss out on some story interactions. But I am wondering there are other major advantages - or disadvantages.
1 Set source abilities. Player characters will all have the same dome of protection, while origin characters will get a large variety, from madness to summon wolf.
2. Story content. All origin characters have their own unique storylines, while your player character does not. Exp isn't a major factor here so dw bout that.
Your player created character is your story. Was your elf a survivor of a human pillaging party hell bent on revenge? .. Maybe Your lizard was a sourcerer prodjigy who was caught by magisters at a young age after you tried to show your friends source.. and you have been a prisoner until for some odd reason.. you are shipped to fort joy.
The path to divinity has many branches, but they all converge at one location eventually. Will you create your own backstory? Or live the life of another.. to unravel their past.. and determine their future?
Though if you want a little more from your playthrough, you can get twice the interactions from companions (if you try a 4 man team, the new weaker lone wolf might interest you instead) if you make two characters from the start and have each take a companion.
Otherwise, once you know the origin stories, the only thing you lose by not playing one is the full control you have over their story progression. If you play Sebille, you can prevent her from killing Stingtail. If she's a companion, she'll always kill him.
This is my first play, but for me I chose a Custom Undead because of the Dome of Protection that seems like the best defensive skill along with Play Dead, both of which might come in handy in Tactician Honour mode.
I read that the game is "meant" to be played using an Origin character because it makes the most of it story-wise. But that part wasn't as important to me (I've played enough RPG's and have heard it all ;P) and I'm not even sure I wanted to play that long. I just heard this was a rare Gamespot 10/10 and about all the raves so I thought I'd check it out.
You still get [racial] dialog options. But you only get [Red Prince]...etc. dialog options if you use that character to interact. And I suppose you miss out on 1 Origin Quest line and it's rewards, though it doesn't seem all that significant unless I'm not triggering enough of them.
The problem with it seems that you don't get to use it in the beginning and by the time you get to use it, you find out it's not so great to stay grouped up in many situations for it to be most efficient. But the others seem most offensive and the only defensive one is Sebile's for 1 unit. I do think Fane has the best one of the lot though. And at least currently, I don't see Red Prince's one deserving a Source point.
Also, I thought you can use Play Dead and wait for enemies to walk away and then run? There's no wiping in Honour mode. XP
