Is there a practical use for masks of the shapeshifter?
It hogs your helmet slot and doesn't give any armor or stats. Being able to switch your racial talents / powers around doesn't seem like a good enough reason to sacrifice your helmet slot.

(Although I have to admit, having my party members wear masks of the shapeshifter so they can be proud lizard folk instead of disgusting half-breeds is pretty tempting.)

Transforming into an elf lets you eat people and see their last memories, which can give you insight into events you otherwise wouldn't have known about.

No need to wear it all the time; just keep it around til you find a juicy leg to munch on, and take it off once you're done.

It does not take a helmet slot..........You don't wear it all the time except for times you need to shapehift into a human, elf, etc.

So anyone can use the mask, not just Fane?

There's also an interaction dialog quest I came across where you need to take off your helmet and you can't be Undead.

Also, I guess if you're passing your turn and don't want it always on, it you can spend 2 AP to be able to cast the buff spell.

Yup. You can even craft more masks using dismembered faces and source orbs and everyone in your party can use them.

It's a cool novelty if nothing else.
