Two Hints to Steal Stuff...
Since I didn't know that, maybe more Rogue players don't know, so I will hint about what I have just learned, those two hints will avoid people to see you stole an item after inspecting you:

If you steal a stackable item, you can steal a part of it, apply to a not stolen stack and turn those stole ones into non-stoled ones. For example: If you stole a Skillbook that you already have you will stack both, making both of them non-stole Skillbooks.

If you steal a usable item (like food and Skillbooks) once you use that item you will not have it anymore (or will become another item) and because of that people can't blame you for stolen an item since you don't have it anymore. For example: If you stole a bucket with water and drink the water, people will not complain to see an "empty bucket" (in this case, only bucket) because isn't the same item.

The best method is to just keep stolen stuff only on the thief and just run like hell when you are done. I thought that they were going to patch stealing from people while talking to them with a different character but last time I tried it still worked. Do that and you have all the time you need and are safe from being caught as long as you don't keep stolen stuff on the other character.

Tips from a pro thief :P
1)Unchain the thief, use your other characters to talk to people who are likely to walk and see your thief, do the pickpocket and teleport to a waypoint. Let them check your other characters, wait for a bit and you re done.
2)Otherwise, just steal, put stolen goods to a barel or a backpack and throw it, let them check you and you re clear again.
3)aerotheurge+scoundrel skill gives you that smoke cover, and the blessed smoke cover (when one of them is source) is your best friend as a thief. The blessed cover skill gives you invisibility so you have plenty of time to leave and make it even easier. What i used to do is keep 1 character with pyramid on meistr's base, steal with bless cover and teleport to meistrs base to restore source points.
4)If you dig gareth's father grave, he has a unique dagger that gives 1 thievery, the dwarf that pickpockets you in driftwood gives you a pair of unique gloves that have 2 thievery when you talk to her about Butter of fortjoy (otherwise you can find her in undertavern and steal them from her or kill her and loot them). If you find 1 belt with thievery you can stack up with +4 from equipment, so 1 to thievery to your finesse character will be enough fot the whole game with this stuff. (Also, if you spend more points in thievery, for every point past 5, you can pickpocket a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of stuff, like 24k gold on lvl 7-8)
5)If you intend to keep an item you stolen and you want the stolen tag to go off, just find a vendor, sell it to him, strip him out of his gold and buy it back from him with his own money. Problem solved!
6)Apportation from aerotheurge skill is the best skill to steal items out in the open. Either find a high position that they cant see you when you use it or use the blessed smoke to be invisible, use aportation and teleport to a waypoint till they stop searching. Apportation is only available after lvl16 but you can craft scrolls much earlier, using rope+high qual air essence+paper (and the skillbook, i think it takes a high tier one)

I believe the Shadow Prince's ring in act 3 also has a point on it.

However, you did miss the other important thievery set item, the chest piece sold by the dwarf bouncer in the Driftwood tavern. You should be able to hit thievery 9-10 in act two and 11 in act 3.

Yea i jsut focused on easily obtainable items just to reach lvl5. After Driftwood thievery is not so useful anyway. On the island there is noone to steal from and in Arx I'm always with like 1million gold from the loan of that granny and doctor's fish that I stack in driftwood. Pickpocket is essential just in driftwood imo.

I mean, that chest item is obtainable in act 2 and should be the only +thievery item for the chest slot. Just gotta buy or steal it.

act three has a handful of vendors in the elf area. It can be a decent place to top off gold to never think about it again.

talk to the trader , other guy steals from him runs some distance and you can stop talking after and go away or wait and let him search you he wont find anything , but some will point out other stolen items that isn't theirs just have some persuasion.

OP - you're missing a few essentials re stealing.

You can steal more, the higher level you are.

You can use the All Skilled up talent to add another point into thievery, then unspecc it.

You can control sneak cones by talking to other characters.

You can employ mercs from Zrilla, give them all your stealing equipment, then retrieve your stealing stuff before dismissing them. (this can give you huge profits when still computing the cost of hiring the mercenary.

You can steal from the armour merchant in Driftwood simply by killing the two people behind him.

There are +1 stealing boots in Arx that you can steal from a vendor NE of the city.

Stealing is OP
I never run out of money, and from lvl 16 - 21 all my characters have divine gear.
I stole 250, 000 in arx in half an hour.

I know a lot of stuff about stealing in D:OS II, but I did point that out because people don't know you can, for example, send a stole item to another character and allow the NPC to inspect you without problem to get cought.

I'm saying those two things because you don't need to send the item to another character neither move far away from the NPC, depending the kind of item, you can just steal and stack, or steal and use.

This has opened my mind to stealing in the game. Wew.
