Just how many ways are there REALLY off of Fort Joy?
Every time I play through it, all routes lead the same. We seemingly half-complete every surrounding quest, get told of 4-5 ways out of Fort Joy, beat the arena, someone loses a collar, the Magisters turn hostile, and we fight through the fort itself and either exit through a big gate or a sewer pipe. What other distinct routes are there? Does Withermoore really have a way out? Is there really a boat you can flee on from the main floor docks?

I'm curious if there truly is a rather diplomatic or silent approach, or if I'm forever destined to smash skulls like the traveling murder hobo I am.

I am no expert in the different methods

But it appears to me that I almost always go via the rowboat with Hans.

You can escape by:

Docks
Some boxes in the castle that lead outside the docks
Kniles
Kid near the boat
A bridge ( I never take this option)

Those are the only options that I know of, if I don't mention the others it because they all lead through there at some point, like slugs and gawin.

You can silently get out too, example sneak through slugs, steal the key in the prison, and sneak through kniles. Easy experience. I wish you could just pick one side to escape but you will be so down on levels, you pretty much have to kill every enemy to stay leveled.

You are confusing "Escape from Fort Joy" with "Escape from First Island"

There is a path behind high judge Orivand where you may simply walk out.

Hmm from what I can think of off the top of my head

  1. Through the docks where you teleport Gawin
  2. Lower the bridge
  3. Through the sewer pipe with kniles
  4. Take the boat to the beach
  5. Near High Judge Orivand there's a broken ladder that lets you drop down onto the beach.(Teleport/Cloak and dagger can be used to jump down as well)

Some of the early ways out people in the ghetto like Amayo and Withermoore suggest don't take you out immediately, but do let you get into the lower level of the fort, and once inside there are a few ways out, many of which can be done without fighting.

Or you could do what I did, which is escape from every possible route, and then turn around and go back in for as much experience as possible haha.

This definitely seems true, but the way it's written, especially for Withermoore, seems very odd. He absolutely infers he can tell you a way out, but he never really does. Maybe if you grab his jar and take it to him, he would? I've never tried that.

You can combine any one entry from each of the two lists which follow to create a unique path through the fort and into the swamp.

Ways IN:

1) Hatch on beach near Yarrow's father.
2) Hidden switch on large statue in courtyard.
3) Side door to Magister's quarters next to drop down ladder.
4) Main gate.
5) Teleport across ravine as shown in The Teleporter quest.
6) Instead drop down into that ravine and click the 'hole' to drop down into prison cells.

Ways OUT:

1) Drop from half ladder in upper right corner of main room with boss magisters fight.
2) Pull lever to lower drawbridge and walk out that way.
3) Left side of Fort along docks and out.
4) Help young boy and leave with him on row boat.
5) Sewer tunnel near Niles the Flenser.

So that gives you 6 ways to pick for how you enter, and then 5 ways to pick how you exit.
