Blood and Gore, Violence, Cannibalism, Graphic text depictions of injury and death, the Moral/Amoral choices, Allusions to sex in text. Not that surprising really.

As an aside, I just found out this website exists, covers the subject pretty well: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/game-reviews/divinity-original-sin-ii-definitive-edition

Because they don't want bad mommies to come and say something even though it really shouldn't be rated M more of a T.
But it does reach the technical standards I suppose for M because of the above post suppose.

A lot of reference to sex in the game, including a few sex scenes described between yourself and another character. Including sex with same-sex and nonhuman partners.

This game allows me to eat people, and that's just the tip of the ice berg xD

you need to play a Lot more video games and the like if you think this game is really Mature and those are extremes.

Also you don't eat living people and its barely a thing only elfs for their flesh eating memory thing that it.

There's a lot of blood, graphic depictions of injuries/diseases in text, alcohol and drug use (From beer and wine in bottles and cups all the way to smoking "drudenae" which is apparently an analogue of a real-world plant-based drug that is typically smoked), allusions to and depictions of sexuality and sex acts between adult partners (Potentially of differing species, such as Human x Lizard, Lizard x Dwarf, Undead x Elf, etc.).

There's also some course language, mature themes including references to slavery and genocide, allusions to and characters that hold racist beliefs (Typically anti-lizard/dwarf/elf racial slurs), and a slew of other objectionable content not suited for younger or more squeamish viewers.

Just because it's not the worst/most graphic depiction of these acts and situations doesn't mean it's acceptable for children. I could say, a censored version could get a T, but that would potentially neuter some aspects of the story for several characters as the themes behind their personal stories get incredibly dark and brutal, including Ifan ben-Mezd.

It definitely takes someone who is ready for this kind of content to be able to really appreciate it, as well. If you're not the kind of person who is ready for or wants to experience the dark and grim themes in this game, you probably won't enjoy the game.

I did feel my heart swell with joy when I got the ending and epilogue for Happily Emmie After (A fan mod that lets you reunite two dogs separated by the Magisters in Fort Joy). The fact that it takes a mod to give two doggos a happy ending instead of a bitter one should make it clear that this game gets... Pretty grim.

Again depends on your take of M, I mean there are visual novels that are way more M rated then this game (and I don't just mean the "H" ones).

Kids can handle plenty even more so in these times, and ya I can agree with to fully appreciate it if helps to be mature of course, but it as a whole really not much to it.

But that post is a good answer you did for why its rated M for those bad momies seeking the answers.

Just because you're desensitized to violence doesn't mean the standards change. Having gore at all is a pretty hard guarantee a game is going to be M and this game gets way more graphic then that, its really not that hard to figure out.

Not just in what is shown, but also depictions of disease, injury, and death in text (Including ghosts you can see later on in Act 2, as well as the various dismembered body parts Elves can eat for hints, flavor text, or even new skills).

I'd say having a gameplay benefit for eating dismembered body parts is a hell of a hard M rating compared to a lot of other things.

I played Conkers Bad Fur Day, Duke Nukem 64, and Man hunt (though this 1 I got bored of fast) as a kid those are way more M is all I am saying. (and this was back on N64 almost 20 years ago)

It true that it fits M rating as I even said, but it not like it really extreme ie if this was adult anime content I wouldn't even call it a ecchi or for those unfamiliar with anime word "really softcore content".

But it doesn't depend on any of our takes on what Mature includes. That's what ESRB is for.
