I'd still recommend playing it, since it's a good game
Oh, I didn't check your profile. Again, though, you don't need to play D:OS to play, or understand the story, in D:OS2.
D:OS2 was fun and engaging even with the issues I have with it.
I hate how loot progression works in this game, I can't stand how you have to buy your skills from merchants or loot them for all the classes instead of gaining skills on level up. The inventory managment is just awful, especially with how much useless trash this game has laying around.
All of that was an issue for me in the first game too, but this game kept me playing regardless of those issues.
Storywise, you won't miss anything. I'm actually more confused than if I hadn't played the first one.
The storyline of DoS1 is essentially both an epic adventure story and a spoof of an epic adventure story at the same time, and even notwithstanding the thousand-year difference in time frame, some of the details of the world don't line up with those of DoS2, so it's best treated as a similar-but-different rendition of Rivellon rather than as a lore primer for the second game.
If you're bothered by setting inconsistency in a series, it *could* be that the Guardians' actions in DoS1 actually rewrite Rivellon's history such that it had always been different than it is during the DoS1 storyline. Alternately, DoS1 may have been presented by a fallible narrator. There are a couple of things that imply that either (or both) of these might be the case.
Also most love 2nd game more then 1st of course.
This point is stupidly exaggerated. Neither of DOS games are comparable to Call of Duty. Call of Duty is popular simple shooter that is easy to get into thus it's popular even if the game isn't really that remarkable and it's also popular among audiences that don't actually game that much.
Neither of the Divinity Games are even arguably awful like CoD can be. even though CoD has massive popularity it is also notorious for the hate it gets too. D:OS games are pretty much universally praised with a few critics here and there.
Sorry but you don't get to play the "I'm right because awful things can be popular" card here.
How much time do you have? DoS1 will set you back 100+ hours easily, the same with DoS2.
DoS1 has very different combat than DoS2. People often debate which is better. I prefer DoS1 because the encounters in DoS1 required me to think a lot more than DoS2. This could be bias since I played DoS1 prior to DoS2 so I had some experience.
DoS1 makes you abuse crafting to get profit. DoS2 makes you a thief to get profit.
DoS2 has better characters. DoS1 has better NPC storylines.
DoS2 has much larger and more in depth maps. There are many high ground advantages in DoS2. DoS1 maps are a bit more flat and require more thinking to plan out your attacks.
DoS1 start of the game is really annoying if you haven't played a divinity game. I suggest getting a guide to help you progress at the start if you are getting pissed off at it. DoS2 story progression is easier.
DoS1 makes you think about using Teleport Pyramids. DoS2 doesn't.
DoS2 has more freedom overall when attempting quests and moving around the map.
Some aspects of DoS1 (Lore) carry over to DoS2 but it won't ruin your DoS2 experience if you don't play it.
DoS2 has free character respecs, DoS1 has char respec but it costs you your skills.
DoS1 really tends towards a team of: 1 Knight, 1 Archer, 2 Mages. which is a Mixed team.
DoS2 tends towards either making a Phys based team or a Magic based team.
I really dont know which one is better, both of them are just so damn good!
