Talk to everyone (including animals), explore everywhere, do not get into combat with anyone higher level than yourself until you're about 12th level, then you can manage 1-2 levels higher.
Take the game slow and be thorough, it's a really good game but it takes time to get the hang of things.
If you got the Pet Pal talent you can talk with the fire slug.
If your thivery is high enough you can get out of the dungeon without fighting I think. and after that you only need to kill two magisters (maybe you can talk your way out of that one).
Game is far from impossible. I am at my first playtroug myself.
The start can be hard, since your options and resources are rather limited, but once you get the hang of it it gets better. I had trouble as well for a bit, once you understand things better, like the armor system, you'll have an easier time of it. I wasn't sure I'd ever get out of the Fort, and now I've not only escaped the Fort, but the island as well.
Edit.
Ifan comes default as a Wayfarer who starts with Pet Pal. You can swap party members around as needed as well.
And yes I have a full party. I have Lohse, The Red Prince, and Ifan. I've tried forever to kill the party and I can't. The archers and their stupid high ground just whittle me down and I don't have any more potions because I used them all in the arena
There are countless tips and tricks out there you can find including the ones already given, you can also add mods (I love mods), lower difficulty etc...
As far as controls its not exactly the controls its a weird lag I think, 1 the worst things of the game that I never seen in any other game. Suggest just being careful (make sure abilities are highlighted before clicking!) Also make sure enemy glowing when targeting him and then right click to cancel the very moment your character starts moving (you will lose 1 ap still, but you can move back in place or w/e need be so long you quick enough without further ap lose).
Again it clear it just frustration as obviously you know it not anywhere near impossible as countless have beaten it and praised it along with the countless mods that actually up the difficulty. So just take a breather and come back to it when you are relaxed like any game that frustrates and just do some of the above (what I said and the others) and you will get passed it and get a hang of it.
One warning it gets WAY harder then that chapter and there are a few fights that will make the entire island seem like a cake walk if you are not prepared for them.
EArly on, the most important thing is to get gear and skills. You need money for that. So use thievery to steal as much as you can from literally everyone.
There's a million tips we can offer, but we need to know a bit more about your team and what you've been doing specifically. I'm more than willing to help, but I need something to help you with so I don't have to write a book about it.
I'm not sure what to do next. I turned in the Dreamer so I can find a way out and the stupid elf just told me to go underground (I already got here by myself earlier). Not sure how to proceed. I stole the key from the stool next to the guards so I wouldn't have to fight them but it was rather pointless considering it just leads me to a castle with a ton of magisters everywhere. I beat the arena and got my collar taken off thinking that would help me, but I just got thrown into jail, and escaped and killed the guy patrolling around here. I'm not sure what else to do. I can't fight my way through the castle I'm too low level.
The start of the game is by far the hardest. I don't know how you built your team but here is the optimal team that I made
2 Handed Knight <-- Fane cuz Time warp is OP as ♥♥♥
1 Handed Jugg <-- Human
Necromancer Spell Caster <-- Must be an Elf
Bow/Cross Bow Ranger <-- Human
This is an all phys team that has some options to pierce armor. You have 2 STR, 1 Dex, 1 Int so spreading equipment is a breeze.
Once you get the teleport gloves from the crocs, you can begin your cheese. Place your party far away from enemies and teleport a single enemy to your party. Smash the enemy and then run away. If you get far enough away, the battle ends and that's one less enemy you have to fight. I did this for quite a few battles.
Any Necro can easily dispose of one NPC at the start of any fight. Use Bed Roll for a pre buff and cast blood rain under yourself, Teleport the NPC to you pre engagement, this will start the fight and decrease the armor value. Flesh Sacrifice to stand on blood with ELEMENTAL AFFINITY if you didn't pre cast blood rain. Cast Mosquito Swarm -> Decaying Touch -> Blood Sucker -> Restoration and its GG.
Always start your character with 1 pt into thievery. Once you get a piece of equipment with +1 thief, go and steal from the vendors. It won't matter because once you leave the fort with the boat at the end of the act, you won't ever come back. This also means you have 4 rounds of thiefing. Moreover, you can kill everything right before you leave for some EXP.
Don't give up on the game, go slow and steady and you will win the race.
Then you can use the teleport gloves to sneak out past the harbour guards which gets you out of Fort Joy to get you to level 4. Head around to the back of the fort to get a waypoint and then return to Fort Joy to complete everything there. The magisters will be hostile so take care to avoid fighting the magisters at the fort entrance until you have done everything else.
Go back to the swamp and get to 5th level before clearing out the magisters in the fort.
If you dont want to exploit the game to steal NPCs blind, Lucky Charm can get you some good gear.
