Believe me. I ended up in Driftwood about two levels below most enemies.
Learn a bit about how to properly build your character (basically pick of of the three main attributes only STR, FIN or INT) and you're probably fine.
You make or break your difficulty with your builds.
Like the tutorial, there is a simple item with looks like crap. But you need it to finish a quest later.
And you can only finish this quest, like many others, if you have a skill..but no spoilers from me :s
Explorer mode is slightly too easy but the mode above it i would consider is the "Very Hard" or perhaps "Impossible" mode (if i compare to other RPG's).
My builds are perhaps not 100% perfect yet (though i've looked at 1h+ of youtube videos from pro's who has thousands of hours of experience).. I'm basing my characters from those builds, though i haven't found all the spells yet.
My main build is something called "Eternal Warrior" (google).
It often feels a bit like the game is more of a puzzle, figure out the one mob that you can take on at your level/gear and gain some better gear and XP, then move on to the one other mob which is possible to manage. i find it quite boring tbh. 4 out of 5 battles feels like a boss battle, and they've extremely lengthy. I'm on the second island.
I think a lot of people probably use mods to make it easier..
You don't need mods to make it easier, but you do need to play it, fail, and learn from your mistakes, to make it easy.
Classic mode is really well balanced; it's a good challenge for a player that knows what they're doing. But to become knowledgeable about the game you need to spend time with it.
I think the simplest thing a new player can do is mentally prepare themselves for the idea of starting over at some point in time. That's what I did and that's what many players do. I think I was halfway through the game when I decided to completely start over. I understood the mechanics, which companions I wanted to take with me in my party, and which classes I wanted to craft.
The thing is, there are no concrete "classes" in the game. It's an open skills-based system, so you are completely free to poke points into whatever you want to. That's incredibly powerful, and incredibly easy to gimp your characters. Taking a hand from some pre-built classes, like those on the Fextralife site, is a decent starting point.
But eventually you're just going to have to play the game, figure out how YOU want to play it, and how YOU want to build your classes, and roll with that. And only experience can teach you those things.

It's a tedious game with an exceptionally high learning curve i would say, the battles themselves also plays out like a puzzle, put in one piece wrong and you'll have to restart. It's very unlike any other RPG in that way. I can see how you can get a lot of hours from this game though, probably something the developer thought was very important.
